Review: Dream A Little Dream by Kerstin Gier

Dream a Little Dream (Silver #1) by Kerstin Gier
Expected publication: April 14th 2015 by Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)

Mysterious doors with lizard-head knobs. Talking stone statues. A crazy girl with a hatchet. Yep, Liv’s dreams have been pretty weird lately. Especially this one where she’s in a graveyard at night, watching four boys perform dark magic rituals. The really weird thing is that Liv recognizes the boys in her dream. They're classmates from her new school in London, the school where’s she’s starting over because her mom has moved them to a new country (again). But they seem to know things about her in real life that they couldn't possibly know, which is mystifying. Then again, Liv could never resist a good mystery. . . .

My Thoughts

I truly believe I should stay away from books involving dreams. I also feel book blurbs can be very misleading at times. I went into this expecting a tantalizing dream world full of crazy girls with hatchets and was that delivered??? Well, yes but not quite in the way I was hoping.

This story follow Liv as she merges families with her mother's new boyfriend and their children. There is a substantial amount of time/pages devoted to fleshing out not only the family dynamics but events that took place over that move. I wish some of these languid descriptions and interactions at school and family dinners were cut down in wake of more excited dream world fun but no. There is a plus side, Liv & her sister, Mia, are spit fires! The sheer quick wit these two girls put out was a story worth all in itself. I loved the clever banter between the two, especially when dealing with situation they were not so thrilled about being in. Then we get to the dream "stuff". It was interesting at that point and I became super invested in seeing how this would all play out. I then realized I was around 70% and nothing to substantial has occurred yet, in my eyes anyway. I kept waiting for this big revelation to come and it did on the last page of the book. It felt more like a fire cracker than a fire work though.

The other issue I had that I had discussed with a friend was that the translation made the dialect seem really off. These teens were speaking like Edwardian Era Adults. That really wasn't a big deal but when one of them made a comment about getting "Sozzled in Style" and was dead serious, I couldn't help but  laughed out loud. Perhaps the author was attempting to portray and upper class proper Queen's English speak but that's not quite how it came off to me. What do I know though right? I'm from NJ for crying out loud.

All in all this book had a lot of potential. It dragged and seriously missed the mark with the crescendo BUT, I will still be reading what happens next. I am very much like out M.C. Liv in that I just NEED TO KNOW! You will either love this or feel as I did so give it shot anyway!

  3. I've read this author's Ruby Red series and wasn't really wowed so I was kind of hoping this book would be better. I'm sad to hear it's not amazing but I might still give it a shot anyway. Great review!

  4. I feel that's the problem with translations, that's why I never read books that were written in English translated into Spanish any more, I always end up wondering about some awkwardness...
But since I cannot read in German, English it'll have to be! ;)
    Great review, Britt!
