Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get

Tina
Pretty much all the characters from:
-Sookie Stackhouse books
-Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Milka
Augustus Waters (while I thought he was alright in the book, the film kind of destroyed him for me...)

Crystal
Barron from Darkfever...too much to say for this one so I'll just leave it at I really don't get it!
Cam from Wait for You...He was just WAY to good to be true and I ended up with 30 cavities after reading this
Sam from Linger...he was way to emo for me!

Arlene
Miles Archer from Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover. He was a jerk… That is all…
Travis Maddox from Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. He’s an even
bigger jerk… Okay now I'm really done…

Ten Books I Enjoyed Recently (last yearish) That Weren't My Typical Genre/Type of Book -

Tina
I don't normally read M/M books, but I adored/loved/worshipped Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and while I normally stay away from book that overly contain emails, documents, interviews and so on, I was really impressed with Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Milka
1. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
2. Graphic Novel edition of Howl by Allen Ginsberg

Arlene
I don't venture out of my reading comfort zone too much, so this one was hard. I did come up with:
1. Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics - YA Horror is new to me, and it was rather captivating.
2. Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman - I rarely pick up YA SciFi, but when I do they seem to be a hit for me, and this one was!

Amber
Honestly, I don't go beyond my normal comfort zone either. However, a book buddy of mine sent me a book from Europe and I hadn't read this author before and gave it a go! I ended up really liking it! So here is my one and only I can think of at this point...
1. Trouble by Non Pratt
(I received Tell the Wind and Fire by Sarah Rees Brennan. It's a magical thriller. I'm a big chicken, so anything with THRILLER makes me want to run with my tail between my legs! I'm going to give it a go! Can I get a High-Five!?)

Milka

Tina
There are so many great songs that would be perfect for books, but these are three I'd love to see:
1. Take Me Away by Lifehouse
2. Litost- x Ambassadors
3. Already Gone- Kelly Clarkson

Arlene
I'm going to choose a recent song and one that's been on my fave list for a while.
1. Like I'm Gonna Lose You - Meghan Trainor & John Legend (That would make a great romance story!)
1. Stolen by Dashboard Confessional (I picture a good summer road trip story with this song.)

Amber
1. I won't give up - Jason Mraz
2. Highway Don't Care - Tim McGraw & Taylor Swift
3.We Danced Anyway - Deana Carter

Ten Historical Settings You'd Love To See

Crystal
Hmm I'm with Tina I'm not a big historical fan so this ones going to be hard for me.  If I had to chose I would chose these two even though I know they've already been done before I love these times
1. Medieval times for sure
2. Victorian times

Milka
1. The beginning of 1600s & the Jamestown Colony - I know there are YA titles set around this period, but my search shows that most were written in the 90s and most seem to be somehow related or connected to Pocahontas. I think this period is extremely interesting (I have actually done a bit of academic research on it in relation to its representation on film) and I think a YA novel from the point of view of the Native tribes residing on the area is something I would definitely like to read.

2. The New Hollywood/American New Wave era - In film history, New Hollywood/Hollywood New Wave spans from mid 1960s (the first films considered as to be examples of this era of filmmaking are Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate) to the early 1980s. I have been interested about this era ever since I first studied it in university and I think it would make a great setting for a YA novel set in Hollywood. Basically, this era is known for the rising young filmmakers and actors like Dennis Hopper, George Lucas, Jack Nicholson and Jane Fonda. Inspiration was taken from the films of The French New Wave and other European movements like Italian Neorealism which basically meant that these young filmmakers wanted to get out of the confinement of traditional Hollywood studios and experiment with the film medium. A lot of drugs, parties, successes and failures are associated with this era, and I think there are so many different ways this period in history could be used in a fictional context. (I almost feel like writing something set during this era myself!)

Tina
I'm not a huge fan of historical settings, but I would love
1.Egyptian
2. 1800's-Little house on the prairie
3.Victorian times

Arlene
I love historicals, so this one is easy!
1. Medieval Times in England around the 1400's. I loved Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught, so it would be fun to experience a joust and the food of that time period. Oh and don't forget… it wouldn't be too shabby meeting a handsome knight in shining armor.
2. I think it would be fun to experience the colonial period as well. Get a bit of first hand history under my belt.

Top Ten Resolutions We Have For 2016

Arlene
First, I would like to finish reading Richelle Mead's Bloodlines series this year. I only have books 5 and 6 to go, and they have been sitting on my shelf for quite sometime. For an author I adore so much, this shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.

Second,  I would like to be more flexible with my YA genre hopping. I used to read all sorts of YA books.  But for quite some time, I've been sticking to Contemporary and the occasional Fantasy. I'd like to jump back into YA Paranormal to cleanse my reading palette.

Lastly, I'd like to make more time this year to mingle a bit more on social media. That includes blog hopping, tweeting, and commenting on Goodreads a bit more. I feel in the last year or so, I've become a silent observer. It might be time to find my virtual voice again…. Watch out! :)

Crystal
Finish reading at least one series that is currently complete.
I would also like to finish up all my outstanding ARCs--they are staring at me!
I really want to start scheduling my blog posts in advance so I can focus better.

Milka
Finish reading The Lunar Chronicles.
Read more backlist titles.

Tina
I would like to resolve to only buy the books that I really want.
I would like to resolve to start and finish the already completed book series sitting on my self.
I would like to resolve to read as many books on my shelf at home collecting dust.

Top ten authors I'm thankful for

Tina
Julie Kagawa- For her Iron Fey books. For it's mischief and adventure. For it's imagination and stunning world. And also for Ash;)
Jennifer L. Armentrout- She's the author that has overflowed my bookshelf with 34 physical copies. I'm gonna need more space/O.O

Milka
Meg Cabot for showing me that it is okay to be dorky and awkward like Mia AND for making me realize that good guys like Michael are THE BEST.
Sarah Dessen for introducing me to the wonders of YA contemporary years ago!

Crystal
Stephanie Meyer for giving me YA.  Without her I don't know if I would have found my way back to this incredible genre.
Tessa Gratton for introducing me to the dark side.  I've never been the same since.

Arlene
There are so many amazing authors out there, that it’s really hard to pick, so I’m going to go with my tried and true…
I’m thankful for Marie Lu, author of the Legend and Young Elites series, because she always reminds me why I love Young Adult despite my constant genre hopping to adult novels.

I’m also thankful for Amy Engel because she’s proven that debut authors can bring something new and exciting to the YA genre that can sometimes feel stale and repetitive.

Amber
There are so many authors I'm thankful for for so many different reasons. Like Crystal, Stephanie Meyer was the first author to make me love reading YA. So, without her I don't think I'd be here blogging about these other amazing writers.
Trisha Wolfe for introducing me to steampunk and taking me under her wings in the writing arena. Lisa T. Bergren for whisking me back in time (Always a RiverTribe girl)

Top Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In The Past Year Or So

Arlene
“Do what I tell you, when I tell you, and the worst thing that'll happen is you'll fall in love.”
Jessi Kirby, Things We Know by Heart

"I raised my face to the sun. My war had been so long, my winter so cold. But I had finally made it home. And for the first time in a long time, I was not afraid."
Ruta Sepetys, Salt to the Sea

Crystal
“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
― Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“Comfort zones are overrated. They make you lazy.”
―
Melina Marchetta, Saving Francesca

Milka
“There's some kind of peace that comes with knowing that for every person who is waiting to be found, there's someone out there searching.”
 (from Dumplin' by Julie Murphy)

“Sometimes it seems like everyone knows who I am except me.”
(from Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda

Tina
-You say you know how we think? Then you know what I'm going to do. I'll rip your face off with a pair of tweezers. I'll tear your heart out with a sewing needle. I'll bleed you out with seven billion tiny cuts, one for each one of us. That's the cost. That's the price. Get ready, because when you crush the humanity out of humans, you're left with humans with no humanity. In other words, you get what you pay for, motherf*cker. -
Cassie Sullivan- The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

Amber

Arlene
I’m really looking forward to Part 2 of Mockingjay! I’m also excited about the final movie installment for Divergent because I’m so curious how they will handle one of the character annihilations that caused an uproar with many of the fans. I stop there to avoid spoilers…

Crystal
I'm really looking forward to The 5th Wave!  I remember being completely creeped out throughout that entire book and I can't wait to see how it translates to the big screen!
I also can't wait for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!  This one is pretty self explanatory lol!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (OBVIOUSLY!) and Ready Player One (I am just afraid that Spielberg will make it too much like a kids movie, like he did with Artificial Intelligence)

Tina

Top Ten Debut Authors Who Have Me Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novel

Amber
Debut authors who have me looking forward to their sophomore novel would be Renee Ahdieh and Sabaa Tahir. I found myself fully engaged in their stories, not wanting to set the book down. They paint a new vivid world of intrigue and unique circumstances their characters navigate through until the very end. I have high hopes their sophomore novels will rival their debuts. Crossing my fingers!

Arlene
Okay, I’m going with a debut author that I can’t wait to read her Sophomore Series. Amy Engel recently published her debut, two book series The Book of Ivy and The Revolution of Ivy, which I read in 2015. I really enjoyed this YA Dystopia series, and it surprised me how she hasn’t gotten more attention! I’m eager to see what she launches next!

Nicola Yoon did an amazing job with her debut novel Everything, Everything. I love YA Contemporary, and she rocked it with her first story. Can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Crystal
I thought Moïra Fowley-Doyle's The Accident Season was so unique and weird and I loved it!  I can't wait to see what her brain spills out next!
I am also eagerly anticipating Debra Dockter's next novel.  I'm hoping it's a sequel to Deadly Design but I will honestly be excited for anything she releases!
Milka
Emma Mills (the author of First & Then) and Becky Albertalli (the author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)

Tina
Cashmere (Velvet 2) by Temple West- I need more Vampire books in my life.
Lock & Mori #2 by Heather W. Petty- I love me some whodunit mystery and Petty knows how to bring in the chill factor.

Wishes I'd Ask The Book Genie To Grant Me

Amber
1. If I had my own genie that granted me two bookish wishes or bookish superpowers what would they be? Hmmm....that's a tough one!
How wonderful it would be to click your heels like Dorothy, or hop into a phone booth like Dr. Who and teleport to any library you wish at any given time! Better yet...your favorite character is your doorman in the teleporting phonebooth!

2. I will admit, the thought of remembering any line in any book at any given time would be fantastic, but I wouldn't burn my last wish on that. But, I would wish for a a whimsical library of my own where the doorway looks like a knot in a massive tree. Its ceiling would be made of a domed glass so I can read under a blanket of stars year round. Books would line the circular walls except for where one portion is glass from floor to ceiling, and a stone hearth juts out meeting an oversized furry rug. Bean bags, a fridge filled with Coca-Cola, and a gummy bears dispenser

Arlene
1. Ability to visit bookstores from around the world whenever I choose.
2. Ability to teleport myself into the setting of the books I choose.

Crystal
1. I would have to pick the ability to freeze time and read for as long I as needed.
2. I would love to have endless dinners with different authors every night.

Milka
1. A superpower that would allow me to stop time whenever I read, so I could dive into a good book without feeling like I should be studying or doing something else.
2. A movie night watching Clueless with Jane Austen

Tina
1. My number one wish wish would be for JKR to do a prequel and a sequel of Harry Potter. Oh, the  possibilities!
2. My second biggest wish I would want granted from the book Genie would be, Midnight Sun from Stephenie Meyer. Yup, I want Midnight Sun to be completed and I want the rest of the Twilight books in Edwards pov and I want a three book sequel. Gimmie!
3. My last wish would be for the making of the Where she Went movie.

Hmm I think I want all my roomie's wishes too! So many amazing ones!  Tina I have to agree with you the most though I want Midnight Sun!!
Leave me a link so I can see all your bookish wishes!
