Movie Release and Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I'm a huge fan of the first Divergent book by Veronica Roth, and the movie adaptation was amazing. However, I never finished the series and just until recently when the trailers for Insurgent started popping up, I figured it's time to jump back into this series.

Well, Insurgent's movie release is next week - Friday, March 20, 2015, so I thought I'd share a bit about the book, my review, and the movie trailer. Enjoy!

Original Book Cover
Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth
Published: May 1, 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins Children's Books
Insurgent is a 2012 science fiction young adult novel by American novelist Veronica Roth, the second book in the Divergent trilogy. As the sequel to the 2011 bestseller Divergent, it continues the story of Tris Prior and the dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. Following the events of the previous novel, a war now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. While trying to save the people that she loves, Tris faces questions of grief, forgiveness, identity, loyalty, politics, and love.

The book was first published on May 1, 2012 by the HarperCollins imprints Katherine Tegen Books in the U.S. and HarperCollins Children's Books in the U.K, a "Collector's Edition" was published on October 30 in the United States. Insurgent received mostly positive reviews from critics, with reviewers praising Roth's writing.

My Thoughts
Despite being a huge fan of Divergent, I was resistant to finishing this series because of how I heard the story ends. However, with the movie being right around the corner, I couldn’t in good book faith see the film without reading the novel first. So, I settled for a happy medium… I listened to the audio, which I have to say was really good. The narrator sounds exactly like the actress in my opinion, so it made for an interesting journey throughout the book.

In Insurgent, the story picks up immediately where the last book left off. Tris and Tobias are on the run and in search of allies for their Divergent faction. The different factions are falling apart and hidden agendas are lurking in every corner.

There were a few points of confusion for me in this installment. For example, for a group of Divergents that were supposedly on the run, they didn't do such a great job of hiding out, planning out their strategy and keeping their motives under cover. They seemed so out there and a bit reckless. I would think in a situation like this, a bit more stealth would have helped their cause, but I guess they aren’t Dauntless for nothing.

Throughout this story I sympathized with Tris. She was definitely struggling with so much that had happened in the previous installment. You feel her regret and guilt for not forgiving Al before he took his life. Most of all, the death of Will completely consumed her, and not to mention the death of her parents were hard-hitting events she was trying to cope with. Considering all of this turmoil in her life, I would have liked to see Tobias take a gentler more understanding approach toward her, but it’s clear he was consumed with his own fears of losing Tris.

Insurgent has a few middle book syndrome ailments including lots of filler events and slow paced moments, but overall the story made progress and kept me vested as a reader. Now that the Divergents have uncovered the secret that's been kept from the different factions at a time when their society is crumbling, how this world will eventually shake out will be an interesting conclusion.
Now I can see the movie guilt free. :)

INSURGENT (DIVERGENT, #2) By Veronica Roth
Publication Date: May 1, 2012

Blurb:
One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

"I'm not going to kiss you. I'm going to figure out what's going on," he says.
I pout my lower lip for a second, but then I grin as the pieces come together in my mind.
"That's why you like me!" I exclaim. "Because you're not very nice either! It makes so much more sense now."
"Come on," he says. "We're going to see Johanna."
"I like you, too."
"That's encouraging," he replies flatly. "Come on. Oh, for God's sake. I'll just carry you."

"What did you do to her?" Tobias says, terse. "What in God's name did you do?"
"I..." Johanna frowns at me. "They must have given her too much. She's very small; they probably didn't take her height and weight into account."
"They must have given her too much of what?" he says.
"You have a nice voice," I say.
"Tris," he says, "Please be quiet."

Author Signing Event: Dark Days of Supernatural – Update & Book Giveaway

I had an opportunity to attend the Dark Days of Supernatural in Huntington Beach, CA where I was among the 500 fans that were hoping to meet some of the authors at this event. It was insanity en masses. I was able to meet a few of the authors and snap some quick photos while they were signing my books before I was moved down the line.

I also chatted with fellow readers while waiting in line; and despite my intention of going to get Insurgent and Partials signed, I succumbed to fellow reader peer pressure and bought Insignia, which I know nothing about but according to everyone around me it’s the next up and coming hit. So, yes I folded and bought myself a copy, which I can't wait to read! So here's who I got to meet:

Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Release Date: May 1, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Purchase: Amazon / Barnes & Noble
It was quite obvious that the majority of the crowd was there to see Veronica Roth, bestselling author of Divergent who attended the event to talk about her second book in the series Insurgent. Her books were sold out, but luckily I came with a couple of copies already in hand.

Partials by Dan Wells
Release Date: February 28, 2012
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Purchase: Amazon / Barnes & Noble
Dan was a sweet and funny guy as you can tell by his unique pose in this picture. I've heard great things about his book Partials and my fellow blogger Tina loved it, so I'm giving it a try and I can wait to read it! If you've already read it, let me know what you thought of it. :)

Insignia by S.J. Kincaid
Release Date: July 10, 2012
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Purchase: Amazon  /  Barnes & Noble
I'd like to consider myself in the know when it comes to YA Paranormals, so I’m surprised this book has slipped my notice. According to the fellow book lovers who attended this event, Insignia which is Kincaid’s debut novel is the next new hit. Well that’s all it took to get me intrigued, so I grabbed a book and can’t wait to see what the hype is all about. Excited!
