My Thoughts:
This second book in the Rebels of the Lamp series was just as exciting, but a bit darker in my opinion.  I liked it, but I am struggling with labeling these as middle grade.

The story opens up with Parker, Reese, and Theo enjoying the benefits of having a genie for a friend.  Everyday they get to go on adventures and live life to its fullest.  Lurking in the shadows those is Vesiroth and he is ready to take back his life and wreck havoc on all of mankind.

Rebels of the Lamp itself was dark and like I said in my previous review had quite a bit of killing within its pages.  Finders Keepers has the same, but it felt like the killing numbers were doubled and there are a few scenes I am struggling with.  I think the authors could have chosen a different way to get rid of certain characters that would have kept this book more in the middle grade lane.  That being said though I do think middle school boys will devour this one just as much as the first and will probably all love the way certain characters met their demise haha.  

My favorite part was how exciting the story line was.  I loved seeing all the magic and never knowing when the next strike from the Path or Vesiroth would be!  It was so fast paced and exciting!!

I still very much liked the characters.  Parker showed he was loyal to his friends and I appreciated his loyalty.  I think he grew up a bit between the last book and this one and it was nice to see.  I also really liked Professor Ellison.  She is tough and cold, but I am very intrigued by her and I can't wait to see where her story goes next.  Theo puzzled me a bit though and I am very curious where his story line go probably the most out of all the characters.  He has some issues going on that need working out and I hope he figures things out soon.

All in all this was another fun addition to the Rebels of the Lamp series and that ending definitely set the stage for a great third book.  I am attached to this series and I can not wait to see what happens next!!  I think the next book will be the best one yet!

My Thoughts:
What a sensational book!! I've been really fortunate to have read so many time travel books that I absolutely adored. I haven't always been lucky with this genre but it's one of my favorites, so I'm happy to say that along with Karen Akins Loop series and my most recent time travel escape, Into the Dim by Janet B. Taylor, Bracken's Passenger adds to the string of great time travel books that keeps me wanting and begging more from this thrilling universe.

I've always been a huge fan of Bracken since her debut novel, Brightly Woven, but I think this is her best book ever. This book has it all. Thrilling adventure, stunning settings, fantastic writing and likeable amazing characters that will hook you from minute one till that evil cliffhanger of an ending. And I do mean evil! I really loved how Bracken created such a vast world of adventure and wonderment. I loved seeing all the different centuries and kept anticipating what timeline we'll see next. Everything felt so real, like I was being transported through time by the eyes of these characters. What lush and violent worlds filled with so much danger and daring excitement. I really have to hand it to Bracken, she did her homework, her words make everything feel so crisp and alive. I don't want to say anything about the plot since I think readers will want to discover everything this book has to offer, and dame, does it offer a lot, but I will say that it's excellently paced with suspense and mystery and even though I'm not a huge historical fan, I couldn't seem to get enough of this history. Never a dull or dragged out moment here folks, this was pure solid entertainment.

I really loved Etta and Nicholas, they are so wonderful individually and together. Etta is a true firecracker, so much fearless feist and fight with a sharp mind and a big beautiful heart to go with it. It's rare to see a character like Nicholas these days, or maybe I'm just reading the wrong kind of books, but Nicholas has such an old-charm about him that makes me smile. He's an honourable and loyal man that lives by his promises. I really loved the romance even though it's fragile and so uncertain but it was the spontaneous warmth and the intimately sweet moments that I couldn't seem to get enough of. My heart can't help want a happily ever after once this is all said and done. 

Bottom line, Passenger was such a great read. It's the kind of journey that will throw you from your own reality and into a whole new world, and real, what more can I ask for in an escape? Except perhaps the next book and the answers to that evil cliffhanger of an ending! A fantastic read!

My Thoughts:
Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book, but I didn't think I'd come out of it loving it the way I did.  These Broken Stars is a fantasy sci-fi survival story that has just about everything I look for an escape. The story line is complex and compelling, the characters are genuinely heartfelt and intriguing and the writing is simply fantastic.

The story begins at a party on board the grandest starship in the galaxy, the Icarus, when three days later the unthinkable happens. The Icarus has been torn out of hyperspace and everyone is scrabbling to get into a escape pod. Only Major Tarver Merendsen, an honored war hero and Lilac LaRoux, the richest girl in the galaxy, make it out alive, but they aren't safe yet. The were pulled into an unknown planets gravity and crash land the pod on the earths forest floor. Shocked and shaken, Tarver and Lilac have to work together if they want to survive and find a way to signal a rescue ship and get off the planet, but they have to do it without killing each other first and try to keep from going crazy when the planet seems to be much more then it seems.

First off, the writing. I never realized this was written by two different authors till I finished this book and started to review it. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are a strong team. The flow of the book is pitch perfect and completely even. The pace was constantly moving at a steady stream of intrigue and anticipation. Form the first chapter till it's breathless conclusion, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I loved the witty style and the setting and atmosphere was spectacularly rich and vivid. I also enjoyed the interrogation questions before every new chapter. It gave us something to speculate and gave us a hint of what to expect next in a round about way. 

The story starts out innocently enough. Boy and girl meet and have a general fondness for the other but are light-years away when it comes to being in the same social class. She drops her glove, he smiles, they flirt, she kindly but painfully dismisses him away and he sulks licking his wounds. A few days later the Icarus is going down and Tarver and Lilac unexpectedly find each other and escape and crash into a planet that seems to have sustainable life qualities. Our duo is faced with many difficult obstacles and challenges that comes with being stranded; looking for shelter, food, water and trying not to get killed, but as the story moves on it begins to turn in a new strange and unnerving direction. I loved the twist in the plot but it was a little mind boggling to wrap my head around certain aspects of the how's and why's, especially come the end. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. The sci-fi part of the story is more of a futuristic feel overall, complete with high-tech gadgets and monstrous spaceships, but I think this book mostly focuses on the survival aspect, which was fine by me since I love nothing more then a really good survival story. This however was very different compared to other books I've read. It was more fresh, thought provoking and outstanding.

There aren't really any other characters here besides Tarver and Lilac, but their story was so interesting you really didn't need anyone else to feel the gaps. Tarver is your mans man. He's a war hero so he's been through this kind of terraform before. He's exactly the kind of guy I'd want if I was ever stranded on a unknown charted planet. He's brave, confident and resourceful.

I love that Lilac isn't portrayed as another mindless heiress. She's intelligent, capable and held up remarkable well given the circumstances. Together, Tarver and Lilac find themselves on unfamiliar ground. Tarver is from the wrong side of the planet and Lilac might as well be royalty. There is a lot of pride coming off in waves on both ends, neither wanting to give the other the satisfaction and admit they need each other. This isn't the kind of story that has instant love, but there is an instant connection, even if they're to stubborn and hide it throughout most of the novel. My favorite part of the story was watching these two try to get along while mucking through the forest, up hills and mountains and trying to find shelters for the nights. It's those little moments that I found myself holding on to a little longer. The snarks and remarks were also priceless and hilarious. It kept it light and entertainment when things became to serious. I didn't find the romance overly romantic, or at least not in the traditional ways. It was more touching, tender, meaningful and very sweet. It's the stuff that pulls on your heart strings and makes you smile one of those big stupid smiles. But one thing is for certain, they are a stunning pair and you will hope against hope that they find it to safety. 

Bottom line, I really had a great time with this book. It's the kind of story that was extremely easy to loss myself within the pages. The sci-fi was brilliantly imaginative and the survive parts had me on the verge of my seat. But what impressed me the most was Tarver and Lilac. They completely owned this book. I was instantly invested with them from start to finish. There is nothing you want more then to see these two hearts safe and sound. I know that this is already set as a companion trilogy, but I love that the ending was well resolved and satisfying, so I'm mighty curious to see where Kaufman and Spooner take this adventure next. Extraordinary, gripping and entertaining! Loved!

My Thoughts:
Escaping the GenTex Labs (GTX), home to the Paper Dolls project where Ariane Tucker was created as a half-human, half-alien hybrid- her only source of survival, with the help of her 'adopted' father, depends on blending in with the humans and following 5 simple rules. But after a cruel joke that gets under Ariane skin, she snaps and loses control and get the unwanted attention of Zane Bradshaw. Zane, the police chief's son and one of the more popular boys at school, starts to see Ariane in a different way, starts to see the real her and after so long of being the invisible girl with her head down, Ariane is starting to enjoy the feeling of being noticed for the first time in her life but risks breaking all the rules and catching the notice of GTX once again.

I've read Stacey Kade's The Ghost and The Goth series, which were filled with fun humor and ghostly banter, so I was looking forward to seeing what she had up her sleeve for her newest release, Project Paper Doll: The Rules. I'm happy to say that not only did I enjoy this book, but I can't wait to see where Kade takes us next!

Wow! This story really impressed me. It has a pretty even mix between high school drama complete with your typical mean girl, pranks, plots, revenge, paybacks and unlikely alliances. Then we have the sci-fi edge to the story which fascinated me the most.

Now, I've never minded a good ole' fashion high school drama and angst in my reads, but I've never been a fan of the whole 'mean girl' thing. In fact, I find it quite annoying, and Rachel Jacob really puts herself at the top of the list. But for whatever reason, it seemed to work really well for this particular story line, specially at the end, so I had to push that aside. But if I'm being honest, the reason why I got along with this book so well is because I have a thing for sci-fi abilities, well developed characters with sass and fire and a love story that screams with chemistry but without all the instant-fluff that takes all the fun out of it. I also thought the flashback moments during the time when Ariane was in the lab was very cruel and inhuman to endure but it really puts an entirely different perspective to Ariane unique situation, gaining my sympathy and attention throughout the entire novel.

My heart really goes out to this girl. Ariane is a complex character but at the same time she feels down to earth and easy to like. I simple adore her personality and the way she stands up for herself and others. Beating down a bully always deserves a cheer in my book. I thought her lack of basic social knowledge was really very cute (French kisses anyone?) but it's her flare, heart and determination that really makes readers want to follow her on this journey right till the end.

Zane turned out to be good people, but I wasn't sure about  him in the beginning. He's always had to live in his brothers shadow and will never be good enough for his father and has no real sense of control in his life. I think that's why he took to Ariane the way he did, he knows what its like to be bullied and understand her in ways no one else can. Their start may not have been the most conventional way to start a friendship, but it really doesn't matter come the end. This turned out to be a really sweet, honest and tender romance that made me want to hold on to those moments a little bit longer.

Rachel did her job well. Seriously could not stand this girl to the depth of my soul. Kade did extremely annoying and hated brilliantly.

The betrayal-character in the end was a really shocker. The first rule is, after all, never trust anyone, but still. I never saw that coming and thought it was a great, surprising and unpredictable move on Kade's part.

All in all, I really enjoyed this one. The writing is strong and these characters are fighters. The Rules is a promising start to what I think will be an amazing series. I have high hopes for the second book and I can't wait to see where Kade takes Ariane and Zane next. Maybe Rachel wont be apart of that book. One can only hope;) Well done!

My Thoughts:
Poison is a great thrilling fantasy novel with a little romance thrown in which is just what I needed.

Kyra, a master potioner, is on the run for trying to kill her best friend who just so happens to be a princess.  Not knowing how she could have missed Kyra knows that she has to finish what she started even though it means killing someone she dearly loves.  Kyra has to save the kingdom at whatever cost.  While she is on the run she meets an interesting boy who she can't shake.  Everywhere she goes, Fred is right there one step behind her.  What follows is hilarious at times, romantic at others, and action packed throughout.  This in one fantasy book you won't want to miss.

I really enjoyed this book.  It was fun and not as intense as some of the books I have been reading lately which is a good thing.  I needed a break and Poison was just what I needed.  I loved the whole potion aspect of the book.  I find that type of thing very interesting and it was so awesome to see how Kyra made potions and I loved that she was awesome at it. The only problem I had with the story was towards the end it got to feel a little more middle grade than the beginning.  I liked that in the beginning we had murder, mystery and a bar arse heroine, but towards the end it all started to feel a little childish and I felt like the age really dropped.  I wish it had stayed consistent and kept with the older feel, but honestly if that is my only complaint then I think I can overlook it.  The story kept me glued to the pages.  I couldn't wait to see why Kyra had to kill Ari and if she would succeed.  

If you are looking for a fun fantasy novel then this is for you.  I was very sad to hear that the author, Bridgit Zinn, passed away.  I didn't find this out until I had already started reading and I the world has truly lost a talented writer. I would have loved to have seen more from this potion world, but I know that will never happen and that really breaks my heart.  Ms.Zinn you are amazing and I am so thankful we at least have this one work of art from you.

Blog Tour & Interview: Melissa de la Cruz

First off, welcome Melissa de la Cruz to WinterHaven Books and thank you for answering our questions!

1. I am beyond excited to start Gates of Paradise after reading Lost in Time that was one major cliff hanger! Can you give us a sneak peak into what we might expect from Gates of Paradise?

Everything! I tried to answer all the lingering questions from the seven years and eight books (six novels, one novella and one encyclopedia) that have been published. I really wanted the fans to get a very satisfying conclusion, not just from the story but also from their questions about the mythology, Schuyler's background, etc.
In that way, it was a difficult book to write, but since I knew the ending of this story since 2005, it wasn't that hard, I still remember the night my husband and I sketched out the main arc of the series—the song "Lost in Time" by Stellastarr* was playing and we figured it out. It's such a blessing to realize it to its conclusion. It was an amazing journey for us as well, learning as storytellers and writers.

2. In the beginning, I wasn't a Mimi fan but over time I have really grown to appreciate her. Did you have a hard time writing her character?
No! Mimi is the easiest to write. :) She is probably the closest to my mindset. I really sympathize with characters who never ever get what they want. She "loses" and she has to survive that. I totally understand what it is to be stymied and frustrated and annoyed, it's how I feel most of the time, how a lot of us feel I think, that the world never bends to our desires. She's the most beautiful girl in the world, and yet her soulmate won't have her – so to me she's always been likable.

3. I really appreciate the world you have created. Do you remember the exact moment when you came up with it?
Yes pretty much. Right after a phone call with Brenda Bowen (then the publisher at Hyperion) and my agent Richard Abate. They suggested I write a dark fantasy book, and I immediately thought "I want to write about vampires!" This was way before Twilight had been published, and I was a huge Anne Rice and Stephen King fan, and also a Harry Potter fan. I loved the wizarding world and thought "it would be cool to create a secret world where vampires exist." Everything fell into place then. I still have my original outline notes from 2004.

4. Will this last book be your final adventure into the Blue Blood world?
Can I let the cat out of the bag? It's not. :) There will be an announcement soon about this exact subject. But let's enjoy the finale first, okay? (Excuse me while I squee and have a huge fangirl momet!  *SQUEE*!)

5. The big question who would you choose Oliver, Jack, or Kingsley?
Oh dear. That is really, really difficult as I love them all in very different ways. I loved Jack from the moment I wrote him on the page, I just loved how angry he was, how beautiful he was, and how remote and then how passionate. Kingsley is just that guy at the party you want to go home with, he's just so devilishly good-looking and so much fun. I actually think I based him on a guy I did go home with after a party! Ha! Oliver I think is the most like me, actually next to Mimi, he has my voice. I love his loyalty, his quirky sense of humor, his style. I love Ollie. Yeah, I can't choose!

If you haven't read the Blue Blood series yet then what are you waiting for??!!  Trust me when I say it is phenomenal and definitely one of the best out on the shelves today.  They are action packed, snark heavy, romance filled and created beautifully.  I am very sad to see these characters go, but at the same time I can't wait to see what happens to Schuyler Jack, Oliver, Mimi, and Kingsley. They make up an awesome cast of characters and I really hope everyone gets there happy ever after!  Gates of Paradise is the final book in the Blue Blood series and it is a race against time for Schuyler to find the gate that she needs and I won't give away spoilers but the end of Lost In Time was a doozy and I am dying to read what happens next!
