Team Mini Spooktacular Reviews

Today, we are excited to share our team mini reviews as part of our WinterHaven Hauntings Month. Each of us selected a book we feel would be a perfect read during this Halloween season,  and we're sharing a mini spooktacular review of our pick.
We hope you enjoy our choices!

A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb
Arlene's Mini Spooktaular Review
With Halloween right around the corner, I wanted to recommend a book that was one of the first ghost stories I ever enjoyed. I loved A Certain Slant of Light for so many reasons! I did the audio version, which was phenomenal. The reader was wicked good because she made the author's beautiful yet painful story come to life. I had never read a ghost story prior to this book, but since then I'm always on the look out for more. Helen, the protagonist and ghost of this book who had been dead for 130 years was likable and captivating. I was drawn to her immediately. All of the characters for that matter were well developed, and there was so much emotion infused in this story that was so well thought out. The author's descriptions of everything were so eerily detailed, that I was able to picture it like a movie. This book was dark, addicting and extremely intense. I loved it!

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Tina's Mini Spooktacular Review
If there is one thing you should know about me, is that I am a big.fat.chicken. Yes, my favorite genre is indeed paranormal; vampires that explode, werewolves clawing a mans head right off and feyfolk turning there victims into ice cubes and smashing them into bits? Yes yes yes. Scary-as-hell supernatural little girl ghost haunting in her pretty little bloodied white dress as she savagely rips her victims entrails out as it plops to the floor? No no no I will say this is a really good freaken horror story. Kendare Blake's writing is strong. To strong. She basically scared the you know what out of me. She doesn't hold back with the gore and gruesome scenes, and I couldn't help but picture it so vividly in my mind. This book is pure shutter-worthy and a littleteenytiny part of me kinda liked it, but I think I have met my scary quota for the year lol.

Frost by Kate Avery Ellison
Frost (The Frost Chronicles, #1)

 Amber's Mini Spooktacular Review
Frost definitely can heat you up and bring on some shivers. Creepy, yes indeed. Don't go out in the woods alone at night. The evil Watchers are awaiting their next victim. Lia lives on a farm with her crippled brother and younger sister on the outskirts of Frost. This had a dystopic feel to it in a sense. The imagery written was easily visualized and pulled me into that world. There are many twists into this story that will creep you out, but also some that really make you think. I loved the protagonist for her wit and smart thinking. Just when I thought I knew how it was going to turn out, I was thrown for a loop. Lia learns that her family was not who she thought they were. I loved how the author implemented this twist into the story. This was a unique story that I enjoyed and wished was a bit longer. I normally don't read books that are too scary, but I was able to handle this one LOL.

The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
Crystal's Mini Spooktacular Review
This book was creepy with a capitol C.  It has everything that I wanted it to have ghosts, Jack the Ripper, murders, and a little romance.  I loved that the author let the romance take a back seat and we got to have the murders take the story.  It wouldn't have been the same otherwise and honestly I loved that the love interest wasn't a main character.  He was kinda in the background but somebody there for Rory to get lost in when she needed it.  The story was original and unique with the ghost flair and Jack the Ripper.  The story is about Rory and after having a near death experience can see ghosts.  Unfortunately these ghosts can in fact be violent if they so chose to be and just when she thinks things couldn't get any worse she discovers that she may be Jack the Rippers next victim.  Totally scary!!  I am new to the whole Jack the Ripper story, but after reading this I think I might look more into it. He was one scary character.  What happens along Rory's story is scary, spooky, and just down right scream worthy at parts.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun Halloween read.
