From the author of Fault Line comes an edgy and heartbreaking novel about two self-destructive teens in a Sid and Nancy-like romance full of passion, chaos, and dyed hair.

Seventeen-year-old Amelia Gannon (just "Gannon" to her friends) is invisible to almost everyone in her life. To her parents, to her teachers-even her best friend, who is more interested in bumming cigarettes than bonding. Some days the only way Gannon knows she is real is by carving bloody lines into the flesh of her stomach.

Then she meets Michael Brooks, and for the first time, she feels like she is being seen to the core of her being. Obnoxious, controlling, damaged, and addictive, he inserts himself into her life until all her scars are exposed. Each moment together is a passionate, painful relief.

But as the relationship deepens, Gannon starts to feel as if she's standing at the foot of a dam about to burst. She's given up everything and everyone in her life for him, but somehow nothing is enough for Brooks-until he poses the ultimate test.

Bleed Like Me is a piercing, intimate portrayal of the danger of a love so obsessive it becomes its own biggest threat

Q&A with Christa Desir:

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I usually start with characters and a very vague idea of what their problem is. For  example, in my alcoholic girl boxer book, I had a voice in my head of a girl who was really  angry and had just gotten out of rehab. The rest of it came out (including her being a boxer) as I  started writing.

Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and  your most recent published work?

My first book FAULT LINE is a book about a girl who is gang-raped at a party and is told  from the POV of her boyfriend who did not attend the party. BLEED LIKE ME is told from a girl’s  POV who is in a very co-dependent and unhealthy relationship. BLM is not exactly an “issue”  book in the same way that FAULT LIINE is and even the things that come up in BLM aren’t as  polarizing as FL. Books about rape can be very tricky, particularly if people are sexual violence  survivors. BLEED is a different sort of book because it leaves the reader with questions about  what we’re willing to sacrifice in order for someone to love us.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I find the business of publishing to be very challenging and when all that noise gets in my  head, I think it is hard to write. I miss writing in a vacuum of pure writing and nothing else. Every morning I try to recreate that vacuum by writing for a few hours with no noise or internet or anything else, but I still can’t stop thinking about the business side of things. (For example: will this book be too controversial? Will schools not want to shelve it? Will people hate it because it’s not a happy ending and therefore sales will suffer?

What are your current projects?

I have a book about an alcoholic girl boxer that is coming out in January 2016. And I have a collaboration with author Jolene Perry that comes out in May 2016. I’m also working on a long-term pet project that is just for fun and just for me. Which makes me very happy. :-)

Excerpt:

Thirty-five days. Thirty-five fucking days. No Brooks. Be back in a month was a cruel joke. I deleted his text and stopped feeling anything at all.

Dennis had concocted a huge sale to get rid of the summer inventory. He wanted me to build wooden birdhouses to mark the sale aisles. It was the stupidest idea I’d ever heard, but he threatened to fire me if I didn’t do it and I thought he might be serious.

“Why don’t you just put sale signs over these aisles?”

“Shut it,” Dennis barked at me.

“I’m just saying, a bunch of birdhouses aren’t gonna let people know they can take fifty percent off of all the merchandise.”

“Quit your bitching. You’ve been in a surly mood this past month and you need to snap out of it.”

I gaped at him. Was I that obvious? “No, I haven’t.”

Dennis shook his head and exchanged a look with Ricardo. “Yes, you have. Now just finish putting your tools away and get your head in the game or I’m dropping you.”

I wasn’t the only surly one. Dennis had been on his period ever since Brooks had shown up drunk that day.

“You’re not dropping me. No one else can work the circular saw.”

“Ricardo can. And working the circular saw isn’t a requirement of the job.”

“It is if you have to build bullshit birdhouses,” I mumbled.

Dennis’s nostrils flared. “No more discussion. Tools away and you better be back here this weekend to work the sale.”

I opened my mouth to argue more, but Dennis held up his hand. When the hand came up, I knew Dennis was really pissed. I shut my mouth and moved to the storage garage. What did I care anyway? I had nowhere else to be.

The lights flickered as I stood surveying the piles of wood and tools littered along the floor. I sat down and started collecting nails, putting them into the tiny, labeled boxes Dennis housed them in. The door to the storage garage creaked open and my head whipped up. Brooks. Heat I hadn’t felt in days surged into my body. My hands trembled and I clenched theminto fists.

“Where the hell have you been?”

He took a tentative step toward me. “Rehab.”

“Really?” My hands unclenched and my eyes scanned his body as I got to my feet. He’d gotten thinner and something about his face looked not quite right.

“Yeah. Sue found some E in my duffel and sort of overreacted. I think fucking Ray tipped her off about it. She told me I needed to pull my shit together and get clean if I wanted to stay with her.”

He moved closer to me, and his hand reached out to trace the hoops in my ear. I shut my eyes for a second and allowed his long fingers to figure eight around the silver before I shook him off.

“You could’ve called me or returned my texts. It’s been thirty-five days. Longer than a month.” My breath came in short bursts, squeezed from the hole in my throat that had been shrinking since the moment he left.

His fingers moved to the now completely faded hickey on my neck. He circled it, his thumb brushing over the smoothness as he stared at me, took all of me in with his too keen eyes. Butterflies fluttered around my stomach. Then he dropped his mouth to my pale skin and sucked hard. My insides coiled, the butterflies stilled. I released a long shaky breath.

“They took my cell and it wasn’t the kind of rehab where you get to make a bunch of phone calls,” he said, nipping me with his teeth.

“Are you going to apologize?” I grabbed at my last vestiges of logic and pushed him off my neck.

“I don’t do apologies,” he said, and his hands circled my waist before he plunged his mouth onto mine. His tongue traced my bottom lip, pressing me to open.

Part of me wanted to push him away. Drop him before he bailed on me all over again. Make him beg for my forgiveness. But seeing him in front of me practically vibrating with want, everything fell out of my head. It was like an IV of Ecstasy pumped directly into my heart.

I clung to his neck. His hands slid beneath the back of my shirt, moving up and down my spine. I raked my fingers through his hair and opened my mouth wider. My entire body trembled with how much I’d missed him.

He pulled away for a second, dropping kisses along my jaw before whispering, “Does the door lock?”

I nodded, drawing in a quick breath. Dennis had installed a lock on the inside of the door a month after he realized how much time I spent alone working there.

Brooks released me and went to shut and lock the door.

“Let me see you,” he said, stepping toward me and lifting me on to Dennis’s work table. He moved his hands to the bottom of my shirt.

I stilled for a second and then helped him pull my shirt off. His hands shook a little when he lifted off the next layer of my thin tank top.

“You’re shaking.”

He grinned at me. “Anticipation.”

The lump in my throat got bigger. “Really?”

His hands moved over my stomach, sliding over old scars. “Really. It’s been a long thirty-five days.”

About Christa Desir:
I’m Christa Desir and I write young adult novels. I am an avid reader and have been in love with YA books ever since reading Judy Blume’s FOREVER (while hiding between the stacks in the library).
My first success with writing came at the age of five when I wrote a story about my sister and our neighbor Andy “kissing in the dushes.” My parents were so proud of this work, they framed it and showed it to every visitor who came to our house. My sister still has not forgiven me.
I live outside of Chicago with my awesome husband, Julio, and our three children. When I'm not writing, I am an editor of romance novels. I am also a feminist, former rape victim advocate, lover of coffee and chocolate, and head of the PTA. It is a rare day when I don’t humiliate myself
somehow, and I frequently blog about my embarrassing life moments.

Halloween Thrills & Chills: Hillary Monahan Tell Us How She Became a Horror Fan

Today on WinterHaven Books I are joining in the spooktacular blog tour for Halloween Thrills & Chills hosted by Wendy at The Midnight Garden!  This blog tour is filled with amazing author guest posts that take us into the mind of the creepy!  Which if you know me then you this is totally my thing!  I am excited to have Hillary Monahan with us on our stop.  She tells us how she became a horror fan and I love love love her story!
Enjoy!

How I Became a Horror Fan by Hillary Monahan
For me, horror fandom started not so much with a story or movie, but with the cover of a book.
SKELETON CREW was a coffee table fixture in our household. My parents were voracious readers, and short story collections tended to linger in common rooms for easy grab-and-reads. Every time a young Hillary passed this particular book, dread slithered through her guts. WHY DOES THE MONKEY LOOK LIKE THAT, she'd proclaim. WHY IS THE MONKEY BOOK ON THE TABLE AGAIN? The smart thing to do would have been to avoid it considering it scared me to death. But no, I kept stealing furtive glances, growing fonder and fonder of the tingles playing along my spine.

WHY MONKEY WHY was my young mantra. Thus, a horrorite was born.

There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of a good scare. Of a contained scare. Sure, seeing The Exorcist at eleven made me sob because I firmly believed I was possessed by the devil and would succumb to a green sludge spewing fate, but the other scares—the good scares—I relished.

My first introduction to monsters was WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. I read it so many times, the book fell apart. I don't recall much in the way of young kid horror fiction (outside of an aversion to all things E.T. and Gremlins), but in my middle grade years, I found the Samantha Slade series to set my heart aflame. My favorite? CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGED FROG. Look at that cover.
I used to count down the days to the Scholastic Book Fair because I knew I'd get another shot at a Samantha Slade sequel. I think there were three in total, or maybe four. Eventually I ran out of books, but that's okay because I found SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK. Not only were the tales horrific, the illustrations were gruesome. I thumbed through that book three, four, five times. I clung to every word. "Green Ribbon" was my favorite, but "Bloody Fingers" was a close second. At camp, I'd repeat the stories to my friends, hoping to spread the terror like a word-born plague. Sometimes, it worked.
Roald Dahl waltzed his way into my stratosphere around this time with THE WITCHES. Henson studios made it into a movie with the great Anjelica Houston and I was delighted. Christopher Pike became a library fixture. From SLUMBER PARTY to CHAIN LETTER, I inhaled whatever Pike I could get my grubby little hands on. And then the Disney movie that scarred me for life dropped into my lap: The Watcher in the Woods. I rented it so many times, the video store used to make fun of me for it. It was put in the children's section if only because they didn't have a "will traumatize you far into adulthood" section.
A year or two later, when I was just a little too old for the age bracket and had comfortably settled into a Stephen King/Dean Koontz groove, Hollywood produced a few movies that I fell in love with even though I knew they were aimed at younger kids. The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury was brilliant (and apparently written back in 1967 for Chuck Jones but it took Bradbury producing it himself many years later for it to see the light of day), Hocus Pocus, and my all-time favorite movie, the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Worth noting too is that, at that age, I was babysitting a lot and a few of my kids loved Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark series. A secret that wasn't a secret: I loved it just as much as they did. I didn't feel as strongly about Scooby Doo, but hey, at least it had ghosts.

Since those days, there are a lot of great spooky stories for kids, and YA has positively exploded with horror for older teens. I didn't touch on Goosebumps because it came RIGHT at the end of my switch from kid horror to adult, but R.L. Stine is still fantastic. The show Gravity Falls is great for younger kids and not too scary. Movies like Frankenweenie and The Corpse Bride bring Burton to the younger audience so they can slide into his big-kid horrors later on. Horror's one of those genres that's growing growing, and as a lifelong fan, I'm excited to see what's next.

Thanks Hillary for stopping by!  I won't lie I am a little traumatized by a few of these pictures, but I can definitely promise I will look them all up to read/watch!

There is a right way and a wrong way to summon her.

Jess had done the research. Success requires precision: a dark room, a mirror, a candle, salt, and four teenage girls. Each of them--Jess, Shauna, Kitty, and Anna--must link hands, follow the rules . . . and never let go.

Once is not enough, though--at least not for Jess. Mary is called again. And again. But when their summoning circle is broken, Bloody Mary slips through the glass with a taste for revenge on her lips. As the girls struggle to escape Mary's wrath, loyalties are questioned, friendships are torn apart, and lives are forever altered.

Review: Forbidden by Kimberley Griffiths Little

ForbiddenForbidden by Kimberley Griffiths Little
Publisher: Harpercollins
Release Date: Nivenmber 4, 2014
Purchase: Amazon / B&N
In the unforgiving Mesopotamian desert where Jayden’s tribe lives, betrothal celebrations abound, and tonight it is Jayden’s turn to be honored. But while this union with Horeb, the son of her tribe’s leader, will bring a life of riches and restore her family’s position within the tribe, it will come at the price of Jayden’s heart.

Then a shadowy boy from the Southern Lands appears. Handsome and mysterious, Kadesh fills Jayden’s heart with a passion she never knew possible. But with Horeb’s increasingly violent threats haunting Jayden’s every move, she knows she must find a way to escape—or die trying.

With a forbidden romance blossoming in her heart and her family’s survival on the line, Jayden must embark on a deadly journey to save the ones she loves—and find a true love for herself.

Set against the brilliant backdrop of the sprawling desert, the story of Jayden and Kadesh will leave readers absolutely breathless as they defy the odds and risk it all to be together

My Thoughts:
I had been waiting to read Forbidden for a while and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Desert Gypsies come to mind when I think of this book.

Jayden’s betrothal ceremony to Horeb was right around the corner. Her sister, Leila was engaged to Zenos, who was supposed to be their future tribe leader, but he died, which made his brother Horeb (the horrible, as I dubbed him) the next Nephish tribal leader.

Jayden was reluctant and scared, as anyone would be if you were forced to marry someone you didn’t love. But her mother insisted, and it was her duty to their family and tribe. The desert was harsh and the obstacles the small group faced was nothing compared to the grief Jayden felt when she had to rely on someone to take care of her newborn sister after her mother’s death.  Horeb’s true colors shown through when Jayden asked for his help and he turned his back on her, and instantly I knew we had a bad guy in the making.

Their tribe was to travel across the desert to this other location where they would stay and then eventually travel back. It was the way of their tribe. I couldn’t imagine traveling on a camel caravan through the desert. Dust, filth, dry, humid...no thanks!

As the tribe moved forward, Jayden begged another woman (Dinah) in the tribe to help nourish her baby sister until she could find other means. The way this woman handled the situation was just horrible!! Jayden promised her mother on her deathbed she would take care of her baby sister. She made many sacrifices to see she lived, despite her gut feeling to never let her out of her sight.

Jayden is so loyal and honest, and berothed to a man who is evil. Her sister Leila craved a different life, even though it was against what she was brought up to consider. Along the way, Jayden runs into a mysterious Kadesh, who’s mysterious, kind, and intelligent, and stole Jayden’s heart along the journey to catch up with their tribe at the oasis.

Horeb sensed there was an attraction between the two and would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.

Jayden’s family had fallen apart, her world turned upside down, and she had to rely on hope and promises to pull herself together to move forward.

I could never live my life as a desert girl. Moving constantly, traveling by camel and covered in dust. Throughout this story, Jayden grew strength and a will to carry on, show bravery when life was at its worst, and make heart wrenching decisions.

Her character was believable and was easily to adapt to. She had courage and strength when most would have thrown in the towel. Kadesh was like a dream guy. Says the right things, is honorable, and I really, really, really liked him. He could easily fill a spot on the “Book Boyfriend Roster.”

This story is full of creative imaginings, dance, action, courage, and a sweet romance that won me over.
