Spotlight: James Dashner's The Game of Lives

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author
James Dashner’s Mortality Doctrine series concludes with
THE GAME OF LIVES

The Maze Runner series has sold more than 12 million copies to date.
Dashner to embark on a 6-city tour in support of the book’s publication.
A fitting end to an exceptional trilogy.”—Kirkus Reviews

Delacorte Press is pleased to announce the publication of THE GAME OF LIVES (On sale November 17, 2015 / $18.99), the final book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author James Dashner’s The Mortality Doctrine series—an edge-of-your-seat cyber-adventure trilogy that includes The Eye of Minds and The Rule of Thoughts. The book has a first printing of 250,000 copies and is supported by a major marketing and publicity campaign.

Only weeks ago, sinking into the Sleep was fun, and Michael used to live to game. The VirtNet combined the most cutting-edge technology and the most sophisticated gaming for a full mind-body experience. But now every time Michael sinks, he risks his life, as the VirtNet has become a world of deadly consequences. The Mortality Doctrine—Kaine’s master plan—has nearly been realized, and little by little the line separating the virtual from the real is blurring. If Kaine succeeds, it will mean worldwide cyber domination. And it looks like Michael and his friends are the only ones who can put the monster back in the box—if Michael can figure out who his friends really are.

The Mortality Doctrine series has been hailed as “an intriguing read for the digital generation” (Kirkus Reviews) and “a gripping page-turner” (BookPage), delivering “an adrenaline rush” (School Library Journal). The series has captivated Dashner fans and became an instant New York Times bestseller. THE GAME OF LIVES is sure to follow suit.

Dashner is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series, which has sold 12 million copies to date, and has seen major motion picture adaptations of both The Maze Runner and most recently The Scorch Trials. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials debuted at #1 at the box office and continues to entertain moviegoers around the globe. The DVD and Blu-Ray release is slated for December.

JAMES DASHNER is the author of the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series, as well as the Thirteenth Reality series and two books in the Infinity Ring series. Spotlight: Mari Mancusi's SMOKED

Smoked (Scorched, #3)Title: Smoked
Author: Mari Mancusi
Series: Scorched, #3
Pubdate: September 1st, 2015
ISBN: 9781402284649
Once upon a time the world burned.
Until a girl and her dragon smothered the flame.
But the spark that ignited the apocalypse never went out.
And the scorch is about to begin…

When Team Dragon rescues Emmy from the government lab, they think the future is finally safe. But they soon discover that Emmy has a secret—a secret so dangerous it could trigger the very apocalypse Connor and Caleb were sent back in time to prevent.

As a dragon hunter, Connor has committed his life to saving the world. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do to complete his mission…even if it meant betraying his brother and losing Trinity’s heart. Even if it meant doing the unthinkable.

But a desperate choice meant to prevent The Scorch, may be the spark that sets the world aflame once more.

The epic conclusion to the genre-bending Scorched series, which Melissa de la Cruz, New York Times bestselling author of the Blue Bloods series, called "A heart-pounding, twisty, time-travel fantasy.”
Mari Mancusi is a two-time Emmy award-winning television producer and author of novels for adults and teens. A graduate of Boston University, she now lives in Austin, Texas with her husband and young daughter. When not writing or producing she enjoys traveling, snowboarding, reading fantasy novels, and her favorite guilty pleasure: video games.

“Okay, Fire Kissed,” he said. “It’s showtime.”

Together they jumped out of the truck, slamming the doors behind them. Connor ran around the back, rolling up the door and pulling out a huge box. Trinity helped him heave it onto the loading dock.

“Are you okay in there?” she whispered to the box. “Perfect,” Nate assured her from inside. “You guys go on ahead. I should be close enough now to hack into their security cameras and get them offline.” He paused then added, “Good luck. Just don’t forget about me once you have your dragon.”

“Never,” Trinity assured him, patting the box. Then she rose to her feet and approached Connor. “Ready?”

“As I’ll ever be.”

With confident, casual steps, they strode up to the guard, who was propped in a chair by the elevator, his feet up, nose in a book, completely ignoring the chaos around him. Guess deliveries weren’t in his job description. Connor gave him a small smile. “We need the elevator,” he informed him.

“Yeah, well, I need my ex-wife to get off my back,” the guard said lazily, snapping his gum. “We’ve all got problems.” Connor’s eyes zeroed in on him. “I don’t think you under- stand,” he said. “We need the elevator. We need to get upstairs. You need to let us in.”

Trinity drew in a breath, watching him work. She had to admit, Connor looked particularly hot when he was working to manipulate people’s minds. It was like he got this look in his eyes—those blue, glowing eyes of his—like he was some kind of Jedi Master or something. Truth be told, it kind of made her want to jump his bones. Not that this was the time or the place.

Pushing the inappropriate thought down, she turned back to his victim. Sure enough, the man’s face had gone slack, and he was staring up at Connor with vacant eyes. “You need the elevator,” he droned. “You need to get upstairs. You need me to let you in.”

Then, to Trinity’s excitement, he slowly rose to his feet, walked over to the elevator in question, and inserted his key. Just like that. A moment later, the doors yawned open. The guard looked at them expectantly.

Trin flashed Connor an approving look. You didn’t even need my help for that one, she teased.

Yeah, well, it’s all you from here on out, he shot back, but he looked pleased by the compliment all the same.

Spotlight: The Truth About Us by Janet Gurtler

The Truth About UsThe Truth About Us by Janey Gurtler
Published on April 7th, 2015 by Sourcebooks Fire
Flynn’s from the wrong side of the tracks, but he may be just right for Jess…

The truth is that Jess knows she’s screwed up. She’s made mistakes, even betrayed her best friend, and now she’s paying for it. Her dad is making her spend the whole summer volunteering at the local soup kitchen.

The truth is that she wishes she was the carefree party girl everyone thinks she is. She pretends it’s all fine. That her “perfect” family is fine. But it’s not. And no one notices the lie…until she meets Flynn. He’s the only one who really sees her. The only one who really listens.

The truth is that Jess is falling apart, and no one seems to care. But Flynn is the definition of “the wrong side of the tracks.” When Jess’s parents look at him, they only see their differences, not how much she and Flynn need each other. They don’t get that the person who shouldn’t fit into your world might just be the one who makes you feel like you belong.

JANET GURTLER:
RITA Award finalist Janet Gurtler’s young adult books have been chosen for the Junior Library Guild Selection and as Best Books For Teens from the Canadian Children’s Book Center. She has had her writing compared to Judy Blume and Jodi Picoult and that makes her happy. She has volunteered at a few soup kitchens and hopes to do more. Giving back is so important. Janet lives in Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, with her husband, son, and a chubby black Chihuahua named Bruce.

Praise for Janet Gurtler:
“Just right for fans of Sarah Dessen and Jodi Picoult.” –Booklist
“Powerful…a gripping read.” VOYA

Excerpt:
The greenhouse is sort of shaped like an old barn. It’s opaque with plastic and steel siding. The door is open, and I follow Wilf inside and pause and then breathe it in. The smell nourishes me. Moist air fills my lungs. I’ve forgotten how much the scents of greenery soothe me. It reminds me of different times. Simpler times.

“Nice,” I tell him, looking around at rows of plants on tabletops and plants stacked on the floor. I realize I’ve missed the satisfaction of nurturing plants.

There’s a man on a ladder in the middle of the greenhouse, fixing a shelf, with his back to us. A little boy stands at the bottom of the ladder, watching. Wilf walks over and pats his head and kneels down to his level. “How are ya, big guy?”

The little boy stands taller and giggles and holds out his hand. He’s got it wrapped tightly around a plastic blue train.

The man on the ladder turns and looks down at me. My heart stops.

It’s not a man at all. It’s him.

Flynn.

My face burns.

“What are you doing here?” he asks.

Wilf frowns and then looks at me. “What’s up with you kids these days? In my time, we treated nice--looking young ladies with respect,” he says to Flynn gruffly. “Flynn, this is Jess. She volunteers here.”

I say a silent thank--you to him for calling me nice--looking and glance back at Flynn.

“Since when?” he asks.

“Since now. How about, ‘hello, nice to meet you’?” Wilf says to prompt both of us. “Is that so hard?”

“We’ve already met,” Flynn says.

My cheeks stay on fire as he climbs down the ladder.

“The shelf is fixed,” he says to Wilf. “Slumming?” he adds to me as he jumps to the floor. He folds up the ladder and then leans it against a counter lined with plants.

The little boy stares back and forth.

I try to think of something light and witty to save the moment, but my mind is blank. Instead, I panic. “What’d you do to get stuck working at this place?” I say, channeling my inner Nance.

“What’d I do?” He stares at me and then his lips turn up. “I didn’t have the right daddy, I guess. I’m here to have lunch. With my little brother. I’m not a volunteer.”

My stomach drops. Fail. Epic fail.

Spotlight: Bleed LIke Me by Christa Desir

Bleed Like Me
Bleed Like Me by Christa Desir
Published on October 7th, 2014 by Simon Pulse
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17335930-bleed-like-me?from_search=true
From the author of Fault Line comes an edgy and heartbreaking novel about two self-destructive teens in a Sid and Nancy-like romance full of passion, chaos, and dyed hair.

Seventeen-year-old Amelia Gannon (just "Gannon" to her friends) is invisible to almost everyone in her life. To her parents, to her teachers-even her best friend, who is more interested in bumming cigarettes than bonding. Some days the only way Gannon knows she is real is by carving bloody lines into the flesh of her stomach.

Then she meets Michael Brooks, and for the first time, she feels like she is being seen to the core of her being. Obnoxious, controlling, damaged, and addictive, he inserts himself into her life until all her scars are exposed. Each moment together is a passionate, painful relief.

But as the relationship deepens, Gannon starts to feel as if she's standing at the foot of a dam about to burst. She's given up everything and everyone in her life for him, but somehow nothing is enough for Brooks-until he poses the ultimate test.

Bleed Like Me is a piercing, intimate portrayal of the danger of a love so obsessive it becomes its own biggest threat

Amazon // Barnes & Noble

Q&A with Christa Desir:

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I usually start with characters and a very vague idea of what their problem is. For  example, in my alcoholic girl boxer book, I had a voice in my head of a girl who was really  angry and had just gotten out of rehab. The rest of it came out (including her being a boxer) as I  started writing.

Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and  your most recent published work?

My first book FAULT LINE is a book about a girl who is gang-raped at a party and is told  from the POV of her boyfriend who did not attend the party. BLEED LIKE ME is told from a girl’s  POV who is in a very co-dependent and unhealthy relationship. BLM is not exactly an “issue”  book in the same way that FAULT LIINE is and even the things that come up in BLM aren’t as  polarizing as FL. Books about rape can be very tricky, particularly if people are sexual violence  survivors. BLEED is a different sort of book because it leaves the reader with questions about  what we’re willing to sacrifice in order for someone to love us.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I find the business of publishing to be very challenging and when all that noise gets in my  head, I think it is hard to write. I miss writing in a vacuum of pure writing and nothing else. Every morning I try to recreate that vacuum by writing for a few hours with no noise or internet or anything else, but I still can’t stop thinking about the business side of things. (For example: will this book be too controversial? Will schools not want to shelve it? Will people hate it because it’s not a happy ending and therefore sales will suffer?

What are your current projects?

I have a book about an alcoholic girl boxer that is coming out in January 2016. And I have a collaboration with author Jolene Perry that comes out in May 2016. I’m also working on a long-term pet project that is just for fun and just for me. Which makes me very happy. :-)

Excerpt:

Thirty-five days. Thirty-five fucking days. No Brooks. Be back in a month was a cruel joke. I deleted his text and stopped feeling anything at all.

Dennis had concocted a huge sale to get rid of the summer inventory. He wanted me to build wooden birdhouses to mark the sale aisles. It was the stupidest idea I’d ever heard, but he threatened to fire me if I didn’t do it and I thought he might be serious.

“Why don’t you just put sale signs over these aisles?”

“Shut it,” Dennis barked at me.

“I’m just saying, a bunch of birdhouses aren’t gonna let people know they can take fifty percent off of all the merchandise.”

“Quit your bitching. You’ve been in a surly mood this past month and you need to snap out of it.”

I gaped at him. Was I that obvious? “No, I haven’t.”

Dennis shook his head and exchanged a look with Ricardo. “Yes, you have. Now just finish putting your tools away and get your head in the game or I’m dropping you.”

I wasn’t the only surly one. Dennis had been on his period ever since Brooks had shown up drunk that day.

“You’re not dropping me. No one else can work the circular saw.”

“Ricardo can. And working the circular saw isn’t a requirement of the job.”

“It is if you have to build bullshit birdhouses,” I mumbled.

Dennis’s nostrils flared. “No more discussion. Tools away and you better be back here this weekend to work the sale.”

I opened my mouth to argue more, but Dennis held up his hand. When the hand came up, I knew Dennis was really pissed. I shut my mouth and moved to the storage garage. What did I care anyway? I had nowhere else to be.

The lights flickered as I stood surveying the piles of wood and tools littered along the floor. I sat down and started collecting nails, putting them into the tiny, labeled boxes Dennis housed them in. The door to the storage garage creaked open and my head whipped up. Brooks. Heat I hadn’t felt in days surged into my body. My hands trembled and I clenched theminto fists.

“Where the hell have you been?”

He took a tentative step toward me. “Rehab.”

“Really?” My hands unclenched and my eyes scanned his body as I got to my feet. He’d gotten thinner and something about his face looked not quite right.

“Yeah. Sue found some E in my duffel and sort of overreacted. I think fucking Ray tipped her off about it. She told me I needed to pull my shit together and get clean if I wanted to stay with her.”

He moved closer to me, and his hand reached out to trace the hoops in my ear. I shut my eyes for a second and allowed his long fingers to figure eight around the silver before I shook him off.

“You could’ve called me or returned my texts. It’s been thirty-five days. Longer than a month.” My breath came in short bursts, squeezed from the hole in my throat that had been shrinking since the moment he left.

His fingers moved to the now completely faded hickey on my neck. He circled it, his thumb brushing over the smoothness as he stared at me, took all of me in with his too keen eyes. Butterflies fluttered around my stomach. Then he dropped his mouth to my pale skin and sucked hard. My insides coiled, the butterflies stilled. I released a long shaky breath.

“They took my cell and it wasn’t the kind of rehab where you get to make a bunch of phone calls,” he said, nipping me with his teeth.

“Are you going to apologize?” I grabbed at my last vestiges of logic and pushed him off my neck.

“I don’t do apologies,” he said, and his hands circled my waist before he plunged his mouth onto mine. His tongue traced my bottom lip, pressing me to open.

Part of me wanted to push him away. Drop him before he bailed on me all over again. Make him beg for my forgiveness. But seeing him in front of me practically vibrating with want, everything fell out of my head. It was like an IV of Ecstasy pumped directly into my heart.

I clung to his neck. His hands slid beneath the back of my shirt, moving up and down my spine. I raked my fingers through his hair and opened my mouth wider. My entire body trembled with how much I’d missed him.

He pulled away for a second, dropping kisses along my jaw before whispering, “Does the door lock?”

I nodded, drawing in a quick breath. Dennis had installed a lock on the inside of the door a month after he realized how much time I spent alone working there.

Brooks released me and went to shut and lock the door.

“Let me see you,” he said, stepping toward me and lifting me on to Dennis’s work table. He moved his hands to the bottom of my shirt.

I stilled for a second and then helped him pull my shirt off. His hands shook a little when he lifted off the next layer of my thin tank top.

“You’re shaking.”

He grinned at me. “Anticipation.”

The lump in my throat got bigger. “Really?”

His hands moved over my stomach, sliding over old scars. “Really. It’s been a long thirty-five days.”

About Christa Desir:
I’m Christa Desir and I write young adult novels. I am an avid reader and have been in love with YA books ever since reading Judy Blume’s FOREVER (while hiding between the stacks in the library).
My first success with writing came at the age of five when I wrote a story about my sister and our neighbor Andy “kissing in the dushes.” My parents were so proud of this work, they framed it and showed it to every visitor who came to our house. My sister still has not forgiven me.
I live outside of Chicago with my awesome husband, Julio, and our three children. When I'm not writing, I am an editor of romance novels. I am also a feminist, former rape victim advocate, lover of coffee and chocolate, and head of the PTA. It is a rare day when I don’t humiliate myself
somehow, and I frequently blog about my embarrassing life moments.

It has been three weeks since the Maids thwarted a plot to overthrow the Queen, and Beatrice is preparing to wed her betrothed, Lord Cavanaugh. However, her plans come to a crashing halt as rumors of a brewing Scottish rebellion spread among the court.

Beatrice’s new assignment is to infiltrate the visiting Scottish delegation using her subtle arts in persuasion. The mission seems simple enough, until the Queen pairs Beatrice with the worst of the lot—Alasdair MacLeod. Beatrice cannot help but think that the Queen is purposefully setting her up for failure. But Alasdair could be the key to unlocking the truth about the rebellion...and her heart. Caught in a web of evermoretwisting lies, Beatrice must rise up among the Maids of Honor and prove what she’s known all along: in a court filled with deception and danger, love may be the deadliest weapon of all.

Excerpt Too Late:
Now I catalogued the gossip with rote disinterest, wishing once again that I was not Beatrice the court insider, but Meg with her fabulous memory and quick hands; Sophia with her powerful gifts; Anna with her intelligence; or Jane with her cruel knives.
I finally was set free well after midnight, the Queen realizing that I was not, in fact, one of her indentured servants, and sending me along to my bed. But I could not return yet to the maids’ quarters. There was no room in Windsor that could hold me this night, and I fled to the North Terrace, then stepped out into the chill wind that somehow did not cut through the rising tide of misery that flushed through me, thick and hot.
I moved all the way to the small balcony that overlooked the wide grassy plain leading to the Thames. And quite without expecting it, I found myself on my knees.
I was not a religious person, I tell you plain. I believed in God, of course, but the dictates as to the worship of that God I left to my monarchs to decide. But the tears that rose up within me and spilled out of my eyes were not a lamentation to the heavens. The heavens had no care for me. The tears were not even a cry to my family or my fellow maids, for whom I would sacrifice much and much again, and who had come to my aid when I’d needed them most. I did not cry to these; they could not heed my tears.
I cried to myself. And for myself.
For the little girl who’d stared adoringly at the father destined to leave for court and kings, and who’d stood by in fear and confusion as her mother had withdrawn inch by painful inch into a world hazed with drugs and despair. For the young innocent at court who’d learned too quickly how not to trust. For the bold and hopeful insider whose manipulations had landed her the most coveted role in the land—bride-to-be of the splendid Lord Cavanaugh.
And for the stupid, foolish girl who—whom no one loved at all.
But I loved. I loved with a strength and fervor that filled my very bones and blood. I loved so much, I could not breathe.

An Exclusive Diary Entry From Margaret--Dance of Shadows

We have another exciting diary entry to share with you!  If you have been following along then you are going to love this one!!
Dance of Shadows (Dance of Shadows, #1)

[September 21]
Dear Diary,

So it turns out some of my fellow students dislike me. I here bear witness to my first public
slapdown.

[Setting: Cafeteria. Our heroine, young hopeful Margaret Adler, is peering through the sneeze
guard at the day’s limp salad offerings. Anna Franko and Chloe Martin appear on either side of
her.]

Anna: I bet she’s pretty pleased with herself.

Chloe: I bet she’s real pleased.

Margaret: Excuse me? Are you talking about me?

Anna: Hilda and Josef pulled her away for center work this afternoon.

Chloe: It’s only because she has that simpleton look. Not because she’s good.

Margaret: They pulled you to the center, too, Anna.

Chloe: Did you hear something?

Anna: Nothing worth worrying about, that’s for sure.

Chloe:  Or maybe they pulled her forward because they needed a brunette to stand next to those blonde guys.

Anna: A good thing her hair was up. Have you seen her hair when it’s not in a bun?

Chloe: Hair? That rat’s nest? And have you smelled her? She’s disgusting.

Anna: Clumsy and disgusting. Her turn-outs suck.

And that’s when I’d finished loading up my plate (salad, salad, and more salad, I’m so sick of it) and turned away from the bar. “What’s wrong?” Maddy asked when I sat down. I forced myself to smile. “Nothing!” I said. “Nothing at all.”

xoxo, M

An Exclusive Diary Entry from Margaret--Dance of Shadows

We have a very exciting promo post to share with you!  Below we have two diary entries from Margaret's diary.  These entries tie into the amazing Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black and definitely add a whole new level to this mysterious and creeptastic book.
Dance of Shadows (Dance of Shadows, #1)

[October 15]

Dear Diary,

If everyone at NYBA didn’t already hate me, they certainly do after yesterday.

“Dance for me, dance for me!” Anna Franko screeched at me during lunch. She and her friends sashayed around the cafeteria with their trays, laughing in my direction and thinking they’re so funny. Which they’re not. They’re not funny at all. They suck. (If you can’t tell, my dear diary, I despise them !!!)

Maddy told me not to pay them any attention, but it’s hard not to when everyone likes them and now everyone thinks I’m Josef’s favorite. Some girl I don’t even know hissed “Teacher’s pet” at me under her breath on my way to English, which shouldn’t have bothered me. But it did.

I don’t need a million best friends, but I don’t want people to hate me. This school is small and people have long memories. I want to be friends with everyone here. But what am I supposed to do—not dance my best because I’m afraid the others will be jealous? That doesn’t seem fair, either.

Josef is the only one who “gets” me. Josef recognizes my talent. Maybe that’s enough?

xoxo, Margaret

[October 15, later]

Diary!

A quick entry to let you know that not everyone at NYBA hates me.

Tonight, before curfew, I was heading up the dorm and Zep got into the elevator with me. We were the only ones there. He turned to me and said, “You’re good, Margaret. Like—really good. Your dancing is special.”

Something shimmered in his eyes when he said that to me. Really—I’m not kidding. And even though Zep isn’t nearly as charismatic as Josef … I believed him. And hearing him compliment made me feel good. It almost made me forget about Anna and Chloe. Almost.

I was about to thank him when the elevator door opened and Zep got off at his floor. “Goodnight, then,” he said to me, before turning away. The door closed before I could get a word out.

No matter. I’ll talk to him tomorrow. The weird thing, though? I’m pretty sure that someone was in the hallway on the boys’ floor, watching me. And I’m pretty sure that someone was Justin.

xoxo, Margaret
