Waiting on Wednesday: The Last Star (The 5th Wave #3) by Rick Yancey

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…

The Last Star (The 5th Wave #3) by Rick Yancey
Expected publication: May 24, 2016
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
We’re here, then we’re gone, and that was true before they came. That’s always been true. The Others didn’t invent death; they just perfected it. Gave death a face to put back in our face, because they knew that was the only way to crush us. It won’t end on any continent or ocean, no mountain or plain, jungle or desert. It will end where it began, where it had been from the beginning, on the battlefield of the last beating human heart.

Master storyteller Rick Yancey invokes triumph, loss, and unrelenting action as the fate of the planet is decided in the conclusion to this epic series.

I've recently devoured the first two books of The 5th Wave series in less than three days, and with the movie coming out this week, how could I not showcase the third and final installment The Last Star?  I can't wait to get my hands on this book to see how the cards play out for Cassie, Sammy, Ben and what's left of humanity.  I expect a ton of action and massive amounts of explosive and emotional moments.

Sooo what book are you waiting on???

Waiting on Wednesday: The Way Back to You by Michelle Andreani and Mindi Scott

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Here's my selection for this week…

Expected publication: May 3, 2016 Katherine Tegen Books

In this witty, heart-tugging novel, two teens take a spontaneous road trip across the Southwest to meet three strangers who received the life-saving organs of their late best friend—charting a journey of loss, hope, and love along the way.

Six months ago, Ashlyn Montiel died in a bike accident.

Her best friend Cloudy is keeping it together, at least on the outside. Cloudy’s insides are a different story: tangled, confused, heartbroken.

Kyle is falling apart, and everyone can tell. Ashlyn was his girlfriend, and when she died, a part of him went with her. Maybe the only part he cares about anymore.

As the two people who loved Ashlyn best, Cloudy and Kyle should be able to lean on each other. But after a terrible mistake last year, they're barely speaking. So when Cloudy discovers that Ashlyn’s organs were donated after her death and the Montiel family has been in touch with three of the recipients, she does something a little bit crazy and a lot of out character: she steals the letters and convinces Kyle to go on a winter break road trip with her, from Oregon to California to Arizona to Nevada. Maybe if they see the recipients—the people whose lives were saved by Ashlyn’s death—the world will open up again. Or maybe it will be a huge mistake.

With hundreds of miles in front of them, a stowaway kitten, and a list of people who are alive because of Ashlyn, Cloudy and Kyle just may find their way to back to her...and to each other.

This reminds me a bit of Things We Know by Heart by Jessi Kirby, and I loved that story!  Couple that with a road trip, and I have a feeling The Way Back to You by Andreani and Scott will be filled with emotional substance. Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Waiting on Wednesday:The Distance from A to Z by Natalie Blitt

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Here's my selection for this week…

The Distance from A to Z by Natalie Blitt
Expected publication: January 12, 2016
Publisher: HarperCollins
This full-length novel by debut author Natalie Blitt is a pitch-perfect blend of Stephanie Perkins and Miranda Kenneally that proves the age-old adage: opposites attract.

Seventeen-year old Abby has only one goal for her summer: to make sure she is fluent in French—well, that, and to get as far away from baseball and her Cubs-obsessed family as possible. A summer of culture and language, with no sports in sight.

That turns out to be impossible, though, because her French partner is the exact kind of boy she was hoping to avoid. Eight weeks. 120 hours of class. 80 hours of conversation practice with someone who seems to exclusively wear baseball caps and jerseys.

But Zeke in French is a different person than Zeke in English. And Abby can’t help but fall for him, hard. As Abby begins to suspect that Zeke is hiding something, she has to decide if bridging the gap between the distance between who she is and who he is, is worth the risk.

I'm always on the look-out for a good contemporary, and this one seems to be perfect for me. The fact that it's by a debut author and I'm even more excited to see what a fresh perspective Natalie Blitt will bring to the YA scene.

Sooo, what are you waiting on?

Waiting on Wednesday: The Season of You and Me by Robin Constantine

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Here's my selection for this week…
Expected publication: May 10, 2016
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
From Robin Constantine, author of The Promise of Amazing and The Secrets of Attraction, comes a funny and heartfelt summer romance set in New Jersey. Perfect for fans of Sarah Mlynowski, Jenny Han, and Morgan Matson.

Cassidy Emmerich is reeling from a sudden, humiliating breakup. The last thing she wants to do is stick around and be reminded of her ex everywhere she goes. On impulse, she decides to spend the summer with her father and his family at their Jersey Shore bed-and-breakfast. A different scene and a new job working as a camp counselor seem like the perfect recipe for forgetting Gavin as quickly as possible—not to mention for avoiding him until he leaves for college.

Bryan Lakewood is sick of nevers. You’ll never walk. You’ll never surf. You’ll never slow dance with a girl and have her put her head on your shoulder. Last year he made one false move—now he’s paralyzed and needs to use a wheelchair. But this summer, he’s back at his camp job and is determined to reclaim his independence—and his confidence.

Cass is expecting two months of healing her broken heart.

Bryan is expecting a summer of tough adjustments.

Neither is expecting to fall in love.
It's no surprise that I'm a true fan of YA Contemporary novels. Actually, I love contemporary novels in any genre… Young Adult, New Adult, Adult… It's the possibly of falling in love mixed with outlying circumstances that add a bit of angst to the story, and The Season of You and Me sounds like the perfect blend of both! I can't wait to get my hands on this novel and experience Robin Constantine's storytelling for the first time. Sounds promising!

Sooo, what book are you waiting on??

When Harry Met Sally for YA romance readers. This opposites-attract love story is perfect for fans of Huntley Fitzpatrick, Stephanie Perkins, and Jenny Han.

June wants high school to end and real life to begin. Oliver is soaking up senior year’s glory days. They could have coasted through high school, knowing about—but not really knowing—each other.

Except that their moms have arranged for Oliver to drive June to school. Every. Single. Day.

Suddenly these two opposites are fighting about music, life . . . pretty much everything. But love is unpredictable. When promises—and hearts—get broken, Oliver and June must figure out what really matters. And then fight for it.

Shuffle, Repeat by Jen Klein sounds like the perfect blend of two of my favorite things… YA contemporary books and music.  I can't wait to see how June and Oliver handle their arrangement during their senior year of high school, and I'm even more eager to see if there are any song recs in the book!

Sooo, what book are you waiting on???

Waiting on Wednesday: How It Ends by Catherine Lo

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Here's my selection for this week…

Expected publication: June 7, 2016
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
How it begins…

"You're in my English class, right?"
I almost checked behind me to make sure she wasn't talking to someone else.

How it unravels…

“You can be my best friend without being my only friend."
Her words were knives raked along my skin. I could hear the goodbye in every syllable.

How it Ends.

Why should I keep her secrets when she didn't keep mine? All it would take was one little click and a carefully worded message.

How it Ends is an honest, heart-wrenching tale of a friendship from first meeting to breakup. Told through alternating points of view, it is about two best friends’ tumultuous sophomore year of bullying, boys and backstabbing and what can happen when friends choose assumptions and fear over each other.
Despite the description not giving away too much about the novel, I can tell this YA Contemporary is going to keep it real… I love this genre because there are times you can dive into a contemporary to simply escape, fall in love, or what I assume in this case will be to remind yourself how tough life can be in high school. I'm really looking forward to How It Ends by Catherine Lo. The topical subject coupled with the great early ratings have me believing it might end up at the top of my bookshelf.

Sooo…. what book are you waiting on?

Waiting on Wednesday: The Girl Who Fell by Shannon M. Parker

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

His obsession.
Her fall.

In this dark kissing book, high school senior Zephyr Doyle is swept off her feet—and into an intense relationship—by the new boy in school.

Zephyr is focused. Focused on leading her team to the field hockey state championship and leaving her small town for her dream school, Boston College.

But love has a way of changing things.

Enter the new boy in school: the hockey team’s starting goaltender, Alec. He’s cute, charming, and most important, Alec doesn’t judge Zephyr. He understands her fears and insecurities—he even shares them. Soon, their relationship becomes something bigger than Zephyr, something she can’t control, something she doesn’t want to control.

Zephyr swears it must be love. Because love is powerful, and overwhelming, and…terrifying?

But love shouldn’t make you abandon your dreams, or push your friends away. And love shouldn’t make you feel guilty—or worse, ashamed.

So when Zephyr finally begins to see Alec for who he really is, she knows it’s time to take back control of her life.

If she waits any longer, it may be too late.
As soon as I read the description of this book, it brought back memories of the emotional turmoil I experienced when I read Stay by Deb Caletti.  I'm excited about The Girl Who Fell for several reasons… (1) it explores the subject of destructive teen relationships that seems to hold a soft spot in my heart, (2) it's written by a debut author, which is just down right exciting (3) I am curious about the cover of the book that parallels a ton of swag I've seen out there for this book, and (4) the early reviews look pretty amazing. Great topic, promising author,  catchy art cover and positive early buzz! Please, give it to me now!!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…
The Glittering Court (The Glittering Court #1) by Richelle Mead
Expected publication: April 12, 2016
Publisher: Razorbill
A dazzling new fantasy series set in a mix of Elizabethan and frontier worlds that’s dripping with romance from Richelle Mead, #1 internationally bestselling author of Vampire Academy.

Big and sweeping, spanning the refined palaces of Osfrid to the gold dust and untamed forests of Adoria, The Glittering Court tells the story of Adelaide, an Osfridian countess who poses as her servant to escape an arranged marriage and start a new life in Adoria, the New World. But to do that, she must join the Glittering Court.

Both a school and a business venture, the Glittering Court is designed to transform impoverished girls into upper-class ladies capable of arranging powerful and wealthy marriages in the New World. Adelaide naturally excels in her training and even makes a few friends: the fiery former laundress Tamsin and the beautiful Sirminican refugee Mira. She manages to keep her true identity hidden from all but one: the intriguing Cedric Thorn, son of the wealthy proprietor of the Glittering Court.

When Adelaide discovers that Cedric is hiding a dangerous secret of his own, together, they hatch a scheme to make the best of Adelaide’s deception. Complications soon arise—first, as they cross the treacherous seas from Osfrid to Adoria, and later, when Adelaide catches the attention of a powerful governor.

But no complication will prove quite as daunting as the potent attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. An attraction that, if acted on, would scandalize the Glittering Court and make them both outcasts in wild, vastly uncharted lands. . . .
The Glittering Court is probably my most anticipated 2016 release. I love Richelle Mead's writing, and to see that she's beginning a new series is pure excitement.  In this series, it looks like she's blending some of my favorite elements of fiction… fantasy, Elizabethan flavor, frontier worlds, intrigue, and romance. Sign me up!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…
Expected publication: January 5, 2016
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Sixteen-year-old Elli was a small child when the Elders of Kupari chose her to succeed the Valtia, the queen who wields infinitely powerful ice and fire magic. Since then, Elli has lived in the temple, surrounded by luxury and tutored by magical priests, as she prepares for the day when the Valtia perishes and the magic finds a new home in her. Elli is destined to be the most powerful Valtia to ever rule.

But when the queen dies defending the kingdom from invading warriors, the magic doesn’t enter Elli. It’s nowhere to be found.

Disgraced, Elli flees to the outlands, the home of banished criminals—some who would love to see the temple burn with all its priests inside. As she finds her footing in this new world, Elli uncovers devastating new information about the Kupari magic, those who wield it, and the prophecy that foretold her destiny. Torn between the love she has for her people and her growing loyalty to the banished, Elli struggles to understand the true role she was meant to play. But as war looms, she must align with the right side—before the kingdom and its magic are completely destroyed.
When it comes to Young Adult fiction, there are two genres I tend to gravitate to, which includes Contemporary and Fantasy. The Impostor Queen sounds like the perfect YA Fantasy to cleanse my palette after a long stretch of ready contemporary novels. Couple that with having previous experience with Sarah Fine's exquisite writing in Sanctum, and I'm sure her newest novel will be an exciting journey.

Waiting on Wednesday: Suffer Love by Ashley Herring Blake

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…
Suffer Love by Ashley Herring Blake
Expected publication: May 3, 2016
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Hadley St. Clair's life changed the day she came home to a front door covered in slips of paper, each of them revealing the ugly truth about her father. Now as her family falls apart in the wake of his year-long affair, Hadley wants everyone-her dad most of all-to leave her alone.

Then she meets Sam Bennett, a cute new boy who inexplicably "feels like home" to Hadley. Hadley and Sam's connection is undeniable, but Sam has a secret about his family that could ruin everything.

Funny and passionate, Suffer Love is a story about first love, family dysfunction, and the fickle hand of fate.

I know the publication date is still a ways away, but the preliminary reviews are looking pretty good. So couple that with the fact that it's Ashley Herring Blake's debut YA Contempoary novel, and I'm sold! I love diving into debut novels when authors are first entering the YA stage because they bring the promise of something new and creative. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how Suffer Love pans out.

Waiting on Wednesday: Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…
Expected publication: May 3, 2016
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Warm Hawaiian sun. Lazy beach days. Flirty texts with her boyfriend back in Seattle.

These are the things seventeen-year-old Sloane McIntyre pictured when she imagined the summer she’d be spending at her mom’s home in Hawaii with her twin brother, Penn. Instead, after learning an unthinkable secret about her boyfriend, Tyler, and best friend, Mick, all she has is a fractured hand and a completely shattered heart.

Once she arrives in Honolulu, though, Sloane hopes that Hawaii might just be the escape she needs. With beach bonfires, old friends, exotic food, and the wonders of a waterproof cast, there’s no reason Sloane shouldn’t enjoy her summer. And when she meets Finn McAllister, the handsome son of a hotel magnate who doesn’t always play by the rules, she knows he’s the perfect distraction from everything that’s so wrong back home.

But it turns out a measly ocean isn’t nearly enough to stop all the emails, texts, and voicemails from her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, desperate to explain away their betrayal. And as her casual connection with Finn grows deeper, Sloane’s carefree summer might not be as easy to find as she’d hoped. Weighing years of history with Mick and Tyler against their deception, and the delicate possibility of new love, Sloane must decide when to forgive, and when to live for herself.

I'm always in the mood for a good YA contemporary novel.  Add a bit of sand, sun and fun and that's the perfect ingredients for my type of reading enjoyment! Summer of Sloane is Erin L. Schneider's debut novel, and I can't wait to dive into this book!  I'm hoping it turns out that I can add Schneider to my list of contemporary faves, such as Dessen, Kirby, Forman, Morgan and Matson to name a few.

Waiting on Wednesday: Touching Fate by Brenda Drake

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…

Expected publication: October 12, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen Crave
Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn’t. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift—with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person’s fate.

Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him.

Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die.

But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.

I don't often jump into paranormal type books, but there's just something about the description of this novel that has me intrigued. I wonder what consequences Aster must face to help out Reese. I'm also curious about the centuries old curse that has plagued Reese's family.  Definitley looking forward to Touching Fate by Brenda Drake.

Waiting on Wednesday: Passenger (Passenger #1) by Alexandra Bracken

Here's my selection for this week…
Expected publication: January 5, 2016
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.

ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever
I was a huge fan of Alexandra Bracken's novel Brightly Woven. Reading that story, I know how crafty and skilled Bracken is with her fantasy writing pen. It's been years since I fell into her storytelling, and coming across Passenger, I know she'll once again catapult me into her story that crosses centuries and continents. Passenger sounds amazing! I can't wait to get my hands on this book and journey with Etta and Nicholas!

Once again, Nikki Kelly looks deeply into the heart and soul of good and evil to create a romantic, action-packed reading adventure.

Waiting On Wednesday - Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke

Welcome to Waiting On Wednesday here at

 Winterhaven Books!

This is a feature created by Jill at Breaking The Spine where we share some books we are anxiously awaiting.

This week's pick...

Wink Poppy Midnight
by April Genevieve Tucholke
Expected publication: March 22nd 2016 by Dial Books

The intrigue of The Virgin Suicides and the "supernatural or not" question of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer coalesce in this young adult mystery, where nothing is quite as it seems, no one is quite who you think, and everything can change on a dime.
Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.
Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous. What really happened? Someone knows. Someone is lying. For fans of Holly Black, We Were Liars, and The Raven Boys, this mysterious tale full of intrigue, dread, beauty, and a whiff of something strange will leave you utterly entranced.
This book looks like it has my name all over it!! I want to thank Jen @ The Starry Eyed Review for putting it on my radar. Holly Black and The Raven Boys are my best things!! I CANNOT wait and will be stalking Dial for this as soon as possible.
