Review: The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2) by Rick Yancey

Published: September 16, 2014
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

My Thoughts
Heartbreaking, exciting and action packed... AND that my friends is why I finished it so quickly! I need book three NOW!!!

The Infinite Sea is the second and middle installment to The 5th Wave. Where most second books suffer from the “middle book filler syndrome” Rick Yancey was having none of that for his series. This installment was relevant and purposeful. A definite treat for fans of this series!

Now that the world has lost over seven billion people, Cassie, Sammy, Ben and Ringer are faced with the next wave of attacks. The Others are determined to exterminate humanity from the Earth, but the extent to which people will go to survive is the strongest fight of all.

In this book, I definitely got more insight into how and why The Others were getting rid of humanity. It was truly an emotional and psychological attack where Cassie, Ben and Ringer refuse to give up hope. However, there is constant mistrust that continues play out and sever the binds among this group. It was heartbreaking at times, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A significant portion of this book focuses on Ringer, who now plays a vital role in the series. Having her introduced as a minor character in book one was just a teaser. In The Infinite Sea, Ringer plays a vital role causing me to shift my feelings for this character.

Overall, this installment was amazing. I can’t wait for the third and final book The Last Star. If it’s anything like the first two books, I expect absolutely pandemonium and heart pumping action. Yes please!
