Waiting on Wednesday: Touching Fate by Brenda Drake

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.
Here's my selection for this week…

Expected publication: October 12, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen Crave
Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn’t. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift—with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person’s fate.

Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him.

Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die.

But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.

I don't often jump into paranormal type books, but there's just something about the description of this novel that has me intrigued. I wonder what consequences Aster must face to help out Reese. I'm also curious about the centuries old curse that has plagued Reese's family.  Definitley looking forward to Touching Fate by Brenda Drake.

New Release: After You (Me Before You #2) by Jojo Moyes

After You (Me Before You #2) by Jojo Moyes
Publication: September 29, 2015
Publisher: Penguin

How do you move on after losing the person you loved? How do you build a life worth living?

Louisa Clark is no longer just an ordinary girl living an ordinary life. After the transformative six months spent with Will Traynor, she is struggling without him. When an extraordinary accident forces Lou to return home to her family, she can’t help but feel she’s right back where she started.

Her body heals, but Lou herself knows that she needs to be kick-started back to life. Which is how she ends up in a church basement with the members of the Moving On support group, who share insights, laughter, frustrations, and terrible cookies. They will also lead her to the strong, capable Sam Fielding—the paramedic, whose business is life and death, and the one man who might be able to understand her. Then a figure from Will’s past appears and hijacks all her plans, propelling her into a very different future. . . .

For Lou Clark, life after Will Traynor means learning to fall in love again, with all the risks that brings. But here Jojo Moyes gives us two families, as real as our own, whose joys and sorrows will touch you deeply, and where both changes and surprises await.

After You is quintessential Jojo Moyes—a novel that will make you laugh, cry, and rejoice at being back in the world she creates. Here she does what few novelists can do—revisits beloved characters and takes them to places neither they nor we ever expected.

My Thoughts
You are going to feel uncomfortable in your new world for a bit. It always does feel strange to be knocked out of your comfort zone… There is hunger in you, Clark. You just buried it, like most people do. ~Will…

Nothing short of beautiful! An emotionally charged story about healing and learning to believe in yourself after a painful loss. I am in love with this story!

After You was definitely my most anticipated releases for 2015, and it absolutely didn’t disappoint one bit! I fell in love with Me Before You and remember wanting just a few more chapters of Louisa’s life after that climactic ending. Well, the sequel After You feels like the epilogue I desperately needed!

This story picks up about eighteen months after the ending of Me Before You. I’ll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but to get straight to the point, Louisa is truly struggling with moving on from the events that unfolded with Will Traynor. She’s working at a job she has no interest in and is floundering from day to day just trying to keep herself from an impending downward spiral.

After a fateful night where she suffers from a horrible accident, she returns to her hometown to recover and there begins her attempt to heal from her wounds both physical and emotional. Through her recovery, she meets a cast of wonderful characters that slowly become the foundation for her new life.

There were so many layers to this novel that only created a feeling of being fully invested in Louisa Clark’s life. After Will Traynor’s fateful decision in Me Before You, we get to journey with Louisa during her road to recovery. She meets Lily Houghton-Miller and Sam Fielding, who I absolutely adored because in their own ways, they brought back the Lou I knew from the first book. I appreciated how Lily challenged Lou to try and move on without a feeling of guilt clouding her every move. I also enjoyed seeing Sam break down Lou’s walls and teach her to love again. Beautiful set of characters that were a perfect addition to this story!

There was also another set of secondary characters that added a whole new flavor to this novel. The Moving On Circle was a breath of fresh air! Daphne, William, Natasha, Fred, Marc and Jake each complemented the story with their own journey toward recovery. I enjoyed their therapy sessions that revealed their insecurities, fears and hopes. It was all so serious, yet shared with a level of brevity that kept the story flowing with ease.

Louisa’s journey wouldn’t be complete without a few scenes with her quirky but loveable family! Adored them! This family was absolutely flawed to perfection! It was quite clear they cared about Louisa and her struggles. It’s nice to experience a story where family is still one of the most important things in life.

Finally, the spotlight deservedly belongs to Louisa Clark. Throughout this entire journey, she showed compassion, bravery, determination and heart. There wasn’t one moment where I faltered in my allegiance to her plight. I wanted her to become not only the Louisa we knew and loved in Me Before You, but an even better version of that character as she worked hard to recover from a painful experience. Lou has become my favorite female character of 2015! Loved her!!

There were moments and passages in this story that truly hit me hard. JoJo Moyes clearly has a skillful way of cutting to the core of her readers’ emotional pockets with quick punches that leave you breathless for air. After You had many of those moments of brilliance. Overall, I believe fans of Me Before You will enjoy journeying with Louisa Clark as she learns to fall in love and believe in herself again. Beautiful… absolutely beautiful!

Review: Dreamland by Robert Anderson

Dreamland by Robert L. Anderson
Published September 22nd 2015
by HarperTeen

Odea Donahue has been able to travel through people’s dreams since she was six years old. Her mother taught her the three rules of walking: Never interfere. Never be seen. Never walk the same person’s dream more than once. Dea has never questioned her mother, not about the rules, not about the clocks or the mirrors, not about moving from place to place to be one step ahead of the unseen monsters that Dea’s mother is certain are right behind them. Then a mysterious new boy, Connor, comes to town and Dea finally starts to feel normal. As Connor breaks down the walls that she’s had up for so long, he gets closer to learning her secret. For the first time she wonders if that’s so bad. But when Dea breaks the rules, the boundary between worlds begins to deteriorate. How can she know what’s real and what’s not?

My Thoughts

I am giving up on dreams! I have now read quite a few books that involved the concept of "dream walking" and sadly all of them have fell flat for me. Dreams are such amazing beautiful things. I just don't feel this book captured what could have been. It was there but, just too little too late for me.

The characters in this book were okay. Mr. Anderson seemed to draw upon human insecurities and infuse them into Dea and Connor. Although I felt Dreamland was more plot driven, the character drive was absolutely apparent in it's own right. That being said I also felt Dea to be a bit boring and not to mention naive. I am harsh I know but REALLY GIRL!? As hard as I tried to empathize with her situation I just couldn't get behind her or her search. So much bad decision making!!!! Actually all the people in this book are less then believable. I mean the conclusions they jump to are just plain ridic. There are 3 simple rules you must not break while dream walking.

Don't be seen.
Don't interfere.
Don't visit the same person more than once.

Great job breaking all of those rules the second you get a crush on some guy. I liked Connor well enough but, I did not enjoy the whole boy next door bit...again. Can't he live like a block over or something?

When the big "reveal" finally happened, I was beyond the point of salvage. Also...how convenient! It felt like the cheap tie up with a string routine. As I said before dreams are infinite and can be anything. It gets to me how the books I've read involving them are so very lacking. I am left with more questions than I care to have upon completing a book. Don't get me wrong his dream world was probably my favorite part of the book and I will have nightmares of faceless men for weeks. Still not enough though.

Review: The Secret Fire by C.J. Daugherty & Carina Rozenfeld

22911719
The Secret Fire by C.J. Daugherty &
Carina Rozenfeld
Publisher-Atom
Released-Sept 10th 2015
Purchase- Amazon / B & N

French teen Sacha Winters can't die. He can throw himself off a roof, be stabbed, even shot, and he will always survive. Until the day when history and ancient enmities dictate that he must die. Worse still, his death will trigger something awful. Something deadly. And that day is closing in.Taylor Montclair is a normal English girl, hanging out with her friends and studying for exams, until she starts shorting out the lights with her brain. She’s also the only person on earth who can save Sacha. There’s only one problem: the two of them have never met. They live hundreds of miles apart and powerful forces will stop at nothing to keep them apart. They have eight weeks to find each other. Will they survive long enough to save the world?
My Thoughts:
At first, I didn't even realize this book was co-written. I've never read anything by Rozenfeld before, but I gotta say, she and Daugherty make a good team. The writing was evenly paced, flowed at a steady stream of intrigue and extremely easy to sink into and get lost in the pages. As for Daugherty? She's one of my favorite authors and her Night School books is one of my favorite series. They were unpredictable, gripping and addicting as hell. While I do still miss that world, I was thrilled when I heard that Daugherty was coming out with a new series and I'm even more thrilled to say that it was everything I hoped it would be.

The Secret Fire, has just about everything I like in my reads. It has two unlikely allies, a 300 year old curse, genetic powers and has a ton of gripping suspense. I absolutely love the concept and found it completely fascinating. Sacha Winters is a 17 year old teenager who lives in Paris. He's reckless, fearless and doesn't value his life, but then again he can't die, at least not yet and not from the lack of trying. For as long as anyone could remember his family is cursed. Every first born son on his fathers side will die at the age of 18 and nothing can kill them before then, which I guess explains why Sacha has lost interest in school, friends and well, life.
Taylor Montclair is a 17 year old teenage girl who takes her education seriously. She's an Intelligent straight-A student who enjoys charities, volunteering and dreams of going to Oxford to study with her grandfather. So when her French teacher asks Taylor to tutor a boy who needs help in English, she agrees. When Taylor gets in touch with Sacha, things aren't exactly smooth, but eventually they get it straight and agree to meet on-line and 'study'. In the meantime, Taylor has been getting these strange headaches, losing time and strangest thing has been happening to her. Soon Sacha and Taylor realize that their meeting isn't by chance, and soon they will learn what fate really has in store for them and what they will mean to one another.

There is so many aspects of the story that I really enjoyed. Sacha would put himself through these terrible and dangerous situations, but like a train wreck, I couldn't look away. I loved learning more about the curse and seeing Taylor train her new found powers and was continuously curious how the two connect, which I have to say when the big reveal happened, it was a brilliant twist. I also loved that this wasn't one of those insta-love romances, cause actually there was no real romance at this point, but we do have a real connection between two people who are fated to save the world by saving each other. I loved their deep protective need and fierce determination to go up against exhaustible odds. This book is extremely suspenseful and riddled with endless questions and all it did was make me want more.

I really enjoyed all of these characters. They all have a unique voice and the greatest personality. Taylor is a wonderful character who has a good head on her shoulders. She took the news about her mutated genes well and it was fun watching her strength develop. I wasn't sure what to think of Sacha at first, he lives his life very dangerously and I found him to be obnoxious and rude, but as we got to know him better, I realized that he's just bitter, scared and mad as hell and my heart hurt for him. He's actually very kind and sweet. Louisa is also pretty kickass. She's got sass and great sarcasm and I love what she brings to the story.

Bottom line, I absolutely loved this one, it's exciting, it's fascinating and it's completely consuming. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Bring on the next book! Instant favorite!

The Sleepwalker Tonic (Nightmares! #2) by Jason Segel, Kirsten Miller

The Sleepwalker Tonic (Nightmares!, #2)The Sleepwalker Tonic (Nightmares! #2) by Jason Segel, Kirsten Miller
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Release Date: September 8th, 2015
Purchase: Amazon
Nightmares! The Sleepwalker Tonic is the sequel to the hilariously scary New York Times bestselling novel Nightmares! by multitalented actor Jason Segel and bestselling author Kirsten Miller. You thought the nightmares were over? You better keep the lights on!

Charlie Laird has a dream life.

1) He has a weirdo stepmom who runs an herbarium.
2) He lives in a purple mansion with a portal to the Netherworld.
3) Since they escaped from the Netherworld, he and his best friends have been sleeping like babies.

But Charlie can’t shake the feeling that something strange is afoot. Charlotte’s herbarium used to be one of the busiest stores in Cypress Creek. Now her loyal following is heading to Orville Falls for their herbal potions.
Weirder, though, Orville Falls is suddenly filled with . . . zombies? At least, they sure look like the walking dead. Rumor has it that no one’s sleeping in Orville Falls. And Charlie knows what that means.

Things are getting freaky again.
My Thoughts:
The Sleepwalker Tonic was just as amazing as the first book in the Nightmares! series!  I loved jumping back into Charlies world and I was even a tad bit more frightened this time around!

This second book in the Nightmares! series takes off with Charlie's life being pretty normal.  He works with his stepmom and has been enjoying his summer with his friends.  That all changes when a strange zombie like creature shows up to buy paint in Cypress Creek.  Charlie knows there is something strange going on so he and his friends investigate and discover something worse than nightmares has taken over the town next to theirs and Cypress Creek is next on the list!

I really enjoyed this story. It was suspenseful, scary in all the right ways, and a great adventure that most will fall into with ease.  The only problem I has was the side story.  Charlie has a huge jealously problem with his brother Jack and for me this takes away from the incredible adventure.  I understand why the authors chose to add this in, but I wish it would have been a little more in the background.  In the previous book Charlie and Jack have some major problems that get worked out and I would have liked to have seen their relationship be stronger than ever just like Charlies new relationship with his stepmom.

Other than that slight problem I loved this to bits. The inclusion of the dream realm was great and I thought it was a very clever addition.  I think what I loved the most though was the ending!  That cliffhanger was PERFECT and left me dying for the next installment!!!

One thing I will say these books are not just for middle schoolers!  I have learned quite a bit from Charlie and his group of friends and I think anyone who picks this up will love and learn too!

Review: The Marvels by Brian Selznick

The Marvels by Brian Selznick

Published September 15th 2015
by Scholastic Press

Caldecott Award winner and bookmaking trailblazer Brian Selznick once again plays with the form he invented and takes readers on a voyage!
Two seemingly unrelated stories--one in words, the other in pictures--come together. The illustrated story begins in 1766 with Billy Marvel, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, and charts the adventures of his family of actors over five generations. The prose story opens in 1990 and follows Joseph, who has run away from school to an estranged uncle's puzzling house in London, where he, along with the reader, must piece together many mysteries.

My Thoughts

I heard about this book from a very good friend of mine at B.E.A. He raved about for a full day so it of course piqued my curiosity. I didn't read to much into the blurb so all I really gathered was that there was part written story and a part that is illustrated. After requesting this from Scholastic i immediately was taken by the gorgeous cover and lovely illustrations. That is when they story began to take shape in mind. I am actually very glad that I did not read the blurb so I was a blank slate to start with.

The Marvels follow a young man named Joseph. He is the son of two very rich society type parents who have shipped him off to a boarding school. After an "incident" leaves him in a bit of trouble and his only friend Wink leaves the school, Joseph becomes a bit bereft and decides that he is going to London to seek out his Uncle Albert Marvel. Once arriving in London the story take a bit of a turn. There was many times while reading when I was sure if it was reality or some type of day dream. This of course all adds to the charm of the book. It is a bit mysterious and allows for much interpretation. I thought I was actually enroute for a ghost story but what I got was a glowing tale of life, love, and how we all deal with loss of loved ones.

That is what life is, Joseph realized, miracles and sadness, side by side.
The Marvels - arc pg. 599

The setting of the house at 18 Folgate Street seemed to be such a presence in the story. It was basically a character all it's own. Not only was it magical and enchanting in it's own right as it was like stepping back through time. It also brought so many people and tied so may lives together. As Joseph slowly unravels the tale of The Marvels amazing and tragic history, you can begin to see how the house was practically woven in among the people.

This book is so sure to be a classic among my family as I can't wait to share it with my son. It will surely delight readers of all ages.
