Eden's Root (Eden's Root Trilogy, #1) Eden's Root by Rachel E. Fisher
Published: December 11, 2011
Purchase: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / Smashwords
The year is 2033 and the world hovers on the edge of explosion as unexplained crop deaths lead to severe global food shortages. In the United States, the Sickness is taking lives slowly, creeping its way into every family. Fi Kelly has already faced the Sickness in her own family, toughening her beyond her years. But a shocking confession from her dying father will push her toughness to its absolute limits. Saddled with an impossible secret and the mission of saving her little sister, Fi sets out to transform herself into the warrior that she must become to survive the coming collapse. Along the way, she will discover that evil can be accidental and that love can be intentional.

My thoughts:
Eden's Root at its core is a survival story.  A very scary real life tale of what can happen when scientists take things too far.  Most dystopian novels have some truth to them, but always seem far too extreme for them to actually happen.  Eden's Root is the exact opposite.  I can honestly see this horrific world coming alive and it is terrifying.

Fi Kelly is your normal everyday thirteen year old girl.  She is shy and tends to stay to herself, but overall she is just a normal girl trying to make it in Junior High School.  That all changes when her father becomes ill and spills his biggest secrets to her.  Left with no one else to depend on, Fi takes it upon herself to learn basic survival skills and prepare for the worst.  What happens next is one girls struggle to save her family and the family she makes along the way.

This is not an easy story to read.  It has several emotional moments and I my heart is still breaking for Fi.  Fi is definitely one of the strongest female characters I have ever read.  To be only thirteen years old, she definitely takes control better than most adults would.  I am mad at her mom and the other adults who let her take on so much responsibility.  It just felt cruel and mean to let her carry all the weight.  I expected more from the adults. That being said though, Fi definitely took charge and grabbed her role by the horns.  Sean was a great secondary character and I am glad for the way things turned out for him.  Overall a nice cast of characters that rounded out this story nicely.

I would definitely recommend this book to people looking for another dystopian novel to read.  It does have its slow parts and I can't say that I agreed with everything that happened, but it does leave an impression on you and I think most people will really like this one.  Good start to a great series.

About the Author:
I am a wife and entrepreneur living and working in Florida. I am also a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where I majored in Biology. It was always my assumption that I would end up making research my life. Though it did not work out that way in the end, my passion for Biology remains intact.

I have always loved biology-based science-fiction and the young adult genre. It is in this vein that I offer my work.
